What God Looks At

Friend, let’s step into this day with a heart ready to love, serve, and forgive. God’s grace is the fuel in our tank even on mornings when we’re still running on yesterday’s coffee.

The Lord once told Samuel, “People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7).

It’s a good thing, too. If God picked leaders based on perfect hair, most of us would be out of the running before breakfast.

We humans love our “hero” types: tall, strong, movie star handsome. But God? He’s got a habit of choosing the folks nobody else would pick. Just ask David.

When Samuel came to anoint the next king, Jesse lined up all of his impressive sons and left David out with the sheep. Basically, David didn’t even make the family’s top seven draft picks. But God wasn’t looking at height or muscles. He was looking at the heart.

Later, when David showed up at the battlefield, he wasn’t there to fight; he was delivering snacks. Yet he’s the one who stepped up to face Goliath. Saul’s soldiers were seasoned warriors, but they were also seasoned worriers. David, on the other hand, looked at that giant and basically said, “You’re big, but my God is bigger.”
That's why God used him!

God still works that way. He sees your heart, too, not your résumé, not your bank account, not whether you can grow a respectable beard. If you want Him to use you, tend to that heart. Fill it with His Word. Pour it out in prayer. Love the folks around you, even the ones who test your sanctification.

God isn’t hunting for perfect people. He’s looking for someone willing to say, “Lord, I’m here. I’m available.” Ability comes later. Availability starts now.

So, ask yourself: What do I want God to see in my heart?

Lord, I offer You my plans, my gifts, and my time. Shape me into someone who reflects Your love. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me courage to respond. Clear out anything that gets in Your way and fill me with Your Spirit. Use me for Your glory alone. In Jesus’ holy name I pray. Amen.

Even a few quiet moments with God can turn an ordinary day into something holy

With joy,

Gwen
