The Power of Forgiveness

Come on now, pull up a rocker, and lend me an ear. Forgiveness is a mighty peculiar thing. Every mornin’ when that sun peeks over the horizon like a shy possum, God’s mercy rises right along with it, fresh, warm, and ready, like biscuits straight outta Grandma’s oven.

But some of us, bless our stubborn hearts, go struttin’ into the day carryin’ grudges the size of river boulders. I did it myself for years lookin’ like a rooster tryin’ to haul a sack of wet cement. Folks would ask why I wouldn’t forgive, and I’d flap my wings and crow out excuses faster than a hen on hot coals.

What I didn’t see, what I flat‑out refused to see, was that forgiveness wasn’t about the other fella at all. No sir, it was about me layin’ down that heavy stone so God could fill my empty hands with peace. Ephesians 4:32 says it plain as cornbread: “Be kind, be compassionate, and forgive just like Christ forgave you.”

Now, I know what you’re thinkin’. “I’ll forgive once, maybe twice, but three times? That rascal’s on his own.” Sounds a lot like Peter, doesn’t it? But Jesus showed us another way. Hangin’ on the cross and hurtin’ deeper than we can imagine, He still said, “Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34). If that ain’t love, I don’t know what is.

Forgiveness doesn’t erase the hurt or pretend the wound never happened. But it breaks the chains bitterness locks around your heart, and let me tell you, bitterness is a terrible landlord. It’ll charge you rent and still leave your soul lookin’ like a busted barn door.

Here’s the kicker, friend: God forgave you. Me, too. None of us earned it. So, who are we to decide someone else ain’t worthy?

Your freedom, your real, deep‑down, soul‑breathin’ freedom, is found in forgiveness. Some relationships may never be restored, but every one of them can be forgiven.

Lord, I bring You these tired, wounded places in my heart. Give me courage to lay down every heavy stone I’ve been carryin’. Teach me to forgive the way You’ve forgiven me: fully, freely, without keepin’ score. Loosen bitterness’ grip, settle Your peace in my spirit, and make me an instrument of healing in a world mighty short on grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

So, if you’re carryin’ hurt today, hand it to the Lord. Ask Him for the grace to forgive and get ready because when forgiveness settles in your heart, it’s like a cool breeze on a hot, Texas July afternoon. It’ll set you free!

With joy,

Gwen
