Saved by Grace

Some mornings hit you with a to‑do list longer than a Texas fence line, but before you go galloping off into the sunrise, it surely helps to sit a spell with the Lord.

Picture it: you, Him, and a creaky rocking chair on His front porch. Because your strength for the day doesn’t come from how fast you hustle. It comes from who you’re sittin’ with.

Paul said it smoother than creamy, mashed potatoes in Ephesians 2:8–9: “You're saved by grace, not elbow grease. No bragging, no spiritual strutting, no ‘look what I did for Jesus today.’ Just a gift from God,” handed over with more love than your grandma’s Sunday biscuits.

But mercy, have we forgotten that? These days, church life can look like a beehive that drank way too much sweet tea, buzzing with programs, committees, color‑coded calendars, and enough meetings to make a grown man cry.

We talk about God more than we talk to Him. We serve Him more than we sit with Him. It’s like bragging about the chicken fried steak while forgettin’ to thank the cook.

Worship isn’t about singing loud enough to scare the pigeons off the steeple. It starts in the heart: quiet, humble, honest. And prayer? That’s one of the kindest things you can do for anybody. You and I can barely fix a leaky faucet, but God can move mountains. When we pray, we’re basically saying, “Lord, You take this. I’m plum out of ideas.”

Trouble is, we’ve mixed up the recipe. We think programs produce spiritual awakenings, when really, spiritual awakenings produce prayer and worship. We’re polishing church floors while forgetting to bow on them. God isn’t impressed with our schedules. He’s after our hearts.

So, don’t get so busy doing things for God that you forget to be with God. Let Him shape you from the inside out. When He does the carving, everything else stacks up neat as a woodpile in winter.

Lord, I want You more than the work I do for You. Forgive me for trading intimacy for activity. Teach me to sit at Your feet, to rest, to listen, to delight in Your presence. Let my service flow from love, not habit. Draw me close until my heart beats with Yours. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Start your day on His porch, friend. The world can wait a minute. Just sit a spell and remember this: you’re not standin’ here today because you earned it or proved yourself worthy. Like Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us, it’s all grace: pure, undeserved, straight‑from‑Heaven kindness. Not your doin’, not your braggin’ rights, just His gift. So, breathe deep, sip that morning quiet, and let your heart rest in the truth that you’re loved, saved, and held by grace from the get‑go.

With joy,

Gwen
