God’s Whisper in the Ordinary

Come on up here and settle into this here porch swing, friend. The mornin’s soft as a lullaby, and if you hush your thoughts for just a second, you might even catch the whisper of God drifting in with the breeze. He’s talkin’ all the time, through the kindness of strangers, the shimmer of sunlight on the trees, even through those challenges that try to trip you before you’ve had your first cup of coffee.

Now take Gideon, bless his unsure little ‘ole heart. When God told him he’d be rescuin’ Israel, he looked around like, “Surely You ain’t talkin’ to me.” So, he laid out a fleece and said, “Lord, if You’re serious, make this thing wet and the ground dry.” Next morning, guess what? Boom! Dew‑soaked fleece, bone‑dry ground. No fireworks, no skywritin’, just a quiet miracle on the threshin’ floor. (Judges 6:36-37)

God’s been speakin’ through circumstances ever since. He’s multilingual, you know. Sometimes He talks through a slammed door. Sometimes through an unexpected open one. Sometimes through a conversation that hits your heart like a well‑aimed pebble. And sometimes it’s as obvious as a rooster ‘a-struttin’ across the yard ‘a-crowin’, “Pay attention now!”

He speaks through Scripture, through prayer, through that nudge in your conscience that refuses to hush. He speaks through people who don’t even know they’re carryin’ a message, and He speaks through ordinary moments that turn out to be stitched with Heaven’s thread.

Just ask ‘ole Jonah. God used a storm, a fish, a plant, and even a hungry, wiggly worm to get his attention (Jonah 1:1,4; 4:6-7). The Lord’s got no shortage of ways to make His point.

The real question isn’t whether God is ‘a-speakin’. It’s whether we’re ‘a-listenin’. Life gets noisy. Worries pile up. Routines dull our senses. But God hasn’t stopped ‘a-talkin’. He’s just ‘a-waitin’ for us to quiet down long enough to start to hear Him.

Father, open my ears to Your whisper, my eyes to Your hand at work, and my heart to Your truth. Help me recognize Your voice in Scripture, in prayer, in people, and in the everyday moments You place before me. Make me attentive and ready to follow wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now, friend, you go ahead and step right on off this here porch and smack dab on into your day with this here truth tucked real close: God’s voice isn’t usually in the thunder. It’s in the stillness, the unexpected, the ordinary. Keep your eyes open, your ears perked, and your spirit tuned. He may guide you through a conversation, a delay, a blessin’, or even a closed door. His timin’ is always perfect, and His leadin’ is always sure. Go on, and listen well today.

With joy,

Gwen
