Friendship and Neighborliness

Some mornings the Lord hands you a brand‑new day like a warm chocolate chip cookie straight out of the oven, and you just have to smile and say, “Thank You, Jesus.” And while we’re sittin’ here on this front porch of grace, let’s talk about friends, the real kind, not the “wave at you in Walmart but pretend they didn’t see you” kind.

Proverbs says it plain as cornbread: “There are ‘friends’ who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). In Southern terms, some folks are about as loyal as a cat in a rainstorm, but a true friend will sit with you on the porch swing when life feels like a tornado warning.

Most of us have “proximity friends,” the ones we know because our kids played in Little League together, took dance class together, or we stood in the same line at H‑E‑B. But true friendship? That’s quality over quantity, like choosing one good brisket over a whole pile of bologna.

And even the best earthly friends will let you down sometimes. Only Jesus gets a perfect score. He’s the Friend who doesn’t ghost you, doesn’t judge you, and doesn’t run when your life looks messier than a toddler with a bowl of spaghetti.

A godly friend looks a whole lot like Jesus:

  • They love God and point you back to Him when your compass is spinnin’.

  • They stick around when life gets crunchy, not just when it’s sweet.

  • They look beyond themselves, servin’ and lovin’ even when it costs somethin’.

But before we go auditionin’ folks for the “Best Friend Award,” we might need to check the mirror. If we want friends like that, we’ve gotta be friends like that, steady, kind, honest, and full of grace. The kind of friend who shows up with prayer, patience, and maybe a casserole.

Lord, thank You for the gift of friendships and the folks You place in my life. Shape my heart to love like You, patient, kind, steady, and full of grace. Help me listen well, speak gently, and serve humbly. Surround me with friends who love You and help me walk in Your truth. Let my presence bring peace, hope, and a whole lot of Jesus everywhere I go. In Your name I pray. Amen.

What’s one friendship in your life right now where you feel God nudging you to show a little extra grace or love?

With joy,

Gwen
