A Winding Road Made Straight
The older I get, the more I’m convinced that life is less like a straight highway and more like one of those back‑country farm roads that twist, turn, and dip for no reason other than to keep a driver humble. And bless our hearts, we keep askin’ God for a straight shot from Point A to Point B like He’s runnin’ some kind of heavenly GPS.
But Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “We plan our course, but the Lord establishes our steps.” In Southern terms? We draw the map, but God holds the steering wheel.
Now, if your life has been a straight line, sugar, I’d love to meet you and put you in a museum. The rest of us? Well, we’ve had detours, potholes, wrong turns, and a few “Lord, are You sure this is the way?” moments, and yet, here we are still standing. Still breathing. Still held.
God’s routes rarely make sense while you’re drivin’ ’em. He’ll take you down a gravel road you didn’t vote for past scenery you didn’t ask to see, and through delays that make you want to honk your horn at Heaven. But later, when the dust settles, you look back and think, “Well I’ll be, that detour saved me. That delay grew me. That closed door protected me, and that winding road brought me exactly where I needed to be.”
Nothing is wasted, not one twist, not one turn, not one tear.
So, instead of fussin’ at God for not paving you a straight interstate, maybe instead whisper, “Lord, thank You for knowin’ the back roads.” Because He does, and He’s faithful. And He’s gettin’ you exactly where He planned all along.
Lord, You know every twist in my road long before I ever get to it. When the path gets bumpy or confusing, teach me to trust the One who never loses His way. Guide my steps when I can’t see ahead, steady my heart when the journey feels rough, and remind me that Your plan is always the best one. Lead me toward the place You’ve prepared, my best destination. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Now, take a deep breath, grab your travel snacks, and keep walkin’. The road may wind, but the Driver is good, and He’s leadin’ you home.
With joy,
Gwen
