Lifted by the Spirit

Well now, come over here, friend. It’s so great to have you take a little time to stop in for a few moments. So, scoot your chair a little closer here on this ol’ front porch of grace because we’re about to stroll into a truth so rich it could outshine a jar of fresh‑made peach preserves. You know that feelin’ when you try to pray and your thoughts git to scatterin’ like a flock of jittery lil’ guinea hens that just spotted a hungry ol’ fox snoopin’ around? Well, that’s exactly where Romans 8:26 slips in with a warm reminder that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses and intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And right alongside it, Psalm 34:17 whispers that when the righteous cry out, the Lord hears and delivers them. Those two verses plum fit together like a pair of well‑worn boots that finally got broke in just right by the busy ol’ farmer.

Sometimes prayer plum feels about as easy as herdin’ a stubborn ol’ mule that flat refuses to even budge. You want to talk to God, but your words fall apart faster than a cornbread muffin that was baked without enough buttermilk. That’s why Jesus promised in John 14:15‑16 that the Father would send us a Helper, the Holy Spirit, who abides with us forever. The Greek word “parakletos” means “one who comes alongside,” which tells us the Spirit just ain’t hollerin’ no instructions from the barn loft. He’s right beside us, knee‑deep in the mud of our confusion, steady as a faithful ol’ farm dog that never leaves your side no matter how crooked the trail gets.

There are days when we don’t know how to pray at all. Not what to pray for, but how to even begin. That’s when the Spirit comes stepppin’ right in and carries our heart to the Father with a strength that makes even the mightiest bull look flimsy and weak. He intercedes for us when our words are nothin’ more than sighs that sound like a tired ol’ raccoon settlin’ into a hollow log for the night. And, friend, that’s sho’-nuff’ why despair ain’t got no place in the life of someone who remembers their Helper is plum omnipotent. When your prayers feel real tangled, the Spirit untangles ‘em. When your heart feels mighty heavy, He lifts it up. When your voice feels tiny and small, He speaks with mighty power.

Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit who helps me when I am weak and wordless. Teach me to trust His intercession and rest in His presence. Remind me that You hear me even when my prayers feel scattered. Keep my heart open and my faith steady as I walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Ok, then, there it is, friend. So, as you walk on your way from this here porch today, carry this here truth with you like a treasured pocketknife your ol’ granddaddy once gave you. The Holy Spirit sure enough is not distant. He’s right there with you, for you, and praying through you. When your words git to wobblin’ like a lil’ ol’ newborn calf tryin’ to learn to stand, He steadies ‘em. When your heart feels a whole lot heavier than a rain‑soaked sheep, He plum lifts it up. And when you feel like you have nothin’ left to say, He does the speakin’ for you with a real strength that reaches all the way up to Heaven. That’s a Helper worth trustin’ every single day.

With joy,

Gwen
