Mighty Strong Promises
Well now, look who’s stopped in today! It sure is nice to see you, friend. Come on over here and pull up a comfy chair on this here ol’ front porch of ours because today we’re gonna be steppin’ right into the tall grass of God’s promises, the kind that shines brighter than a lil’ ol’ firefly that accidentally swallowed a lil’ piece of a solar stick. Second Peter 1:3 tells us that His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness. That there don’t mean “some things” or “maybe if you behave yourself” things. That there means all things, every last scrap, like a pantry so full it looks like an ol’ squirrel went out and spent all autumn preparin’ for a big ol’ buffet.
Jesus backs this up in Matthew 6:31-34 by remindin’ us not to be worryin’ about food, drink, or clothes because our Father already knows what we need. He’s not pacin’ around in Heaven like a nervous ol’ barn cat that heard a screen door slam. He’s real steady, calm, and fully aware of every single detail of our lives.
To deepen this here truth, Psalm 55:22 tells us to cast our burdens on the Lord because He will sustain us. That there means when worry starts buzzin’ around your head like an ol’ horsefly that skipped breakfast, you can hand it straight on over to God. He’s not overwhelmed at all. He ain’t irritated either. He’s simply mighty faithful.
Peter wrote to believers surrounded by trouble from the outside and trouble from the inside. They were like a lil’ ol’ chicken hen tryin’ to guard her baby chicks from every nosy ol’ critter that wandered through the barnyard. Yet, Peter pointed them to the very same thing we’re needin’ today. God’s promises. His Word. His steady hand.
Friend, when worry rises, don’t be lettin’ it sit with you like an ol’ possum that’s pretendin’ to be nappin’ on your porch swing. Go right straight on to the Word. Sit with it for a spell. Let it git to settlin’ your spirit until peace plum shows up like a real cool breeze on a mighty hot Texas afternoon. Isaiah 26:3 promises that He will keep us in perfect peace when our minds are stayed on Him. That there ain’t no kind of wishful thinking. That there’s a promise with roots a whole lot deeper than an old live oak that has survived a hundred years of fierce storms.
Father, thank You for giving us everything we need for life and godliness. Help us cast our worries on You and trust Your promises more than our fears. Settle our hearts, steady our minds, and remind us daily that You are faithful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Well, there you have it, friend, and that there’s enough porch talkin’ for today. I pray that you are gonna be walkin’ away plum lighter than a lil’ ol’ hummingbird that just finished eatin’ a real sweet nectar breakfast, braver than a real proud ol’ rooster that thinks he sho’-nuff owns the whole barnyard, and steadier than a stout fence post that has stood through every kind of weather for many years. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord forever because you can be knowin’ and trustin’ that God’s promises are plum all yours, and they’re not gonna be goin’ anywhere. And it’s plum one of them there things you can be runnin’ out and tellin’ everybody you meet!
With joy,
Gwen
