When Your Lips say, “Praise the Lord,” but Your Heart’s Still ‘aWanderin’
Well, howdy there, friend! Keep your chin up and your heart real steady. Ease yourself into that comfy rocker on this here porch for a little ‘ole minute. Life may toss you around like a lawn chair in a spring storm, but God’s peace can anchor you better than a cinder block tied to a little ol’ flat‑bottom boat that’s seen more catfish than daylight.
Jesus said it straight, like a grandma who’s done run outta patience ,when He said, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (Mark 7:6). Whew! That’ll sting your soul quicker than steppin’ on a fire ant mound barefoot.
In Mark 7, the Pharisees were ‘a‑fussin’ because Jesus’ disciples didn’t wash their hands the “proper” religious way. Bless their rule‑lovin’ hearts, they thought clean hands meant clean souls. That’s like thinkin’ a pig’s clean just because you hosed off the mud. Jesus wasn’t fooled. He was ‘a‑lookin’ past the soap and water straight into the heart where the real critters hide.
And if we’re honest, we’ve all played that little ol’ game. We go to church, nod at the sermon, maybe highlight a verse or two so it looks like we’re spiritual. But Jesus says it’s not the outside that gets us in trouble. It’s what’s ‘a‑simmerin’ on the inside: pride, jealousy, bitterness, gossip, all that mess ‘a-bubblin’ up like a pot of beans left unattended while the dog’s barkin’ at a squirrel.
The good news? Jesus doesn’t just holler, “Do better!” He offers a full‑blown heart overhaul. Real, deep, inside‑out change. When we invite Him in, He starts ‘a‑cleanin’ house, shooing out the spiritual raccoons, ‘a-sweepin’ up the emotional chicken feathers, and openin’ windows we didn’t even know were painted shut.
And if you need proof of His grace, just take a peek later on in Mark 7. Jesus heals a Gentile woman’s daughter and a man who couldn’t hear or speak. These weren’t religious VIPs. No, they were plain ‘ole folk who came like thirsty deer to water, and Jesus met them with compassion, not a clipboard.
So, today, let’s do a little heart check. Are we just ‘a‑sayin’ the right things, or are we ‘a-lettin’ Jesus shape the inside of us? Are we performin’ religion, or ‘a-walkin’ with the Savior who loves us enough to transform us?
Father, search my heart today. Sweep out what doesn’t belong and fill me with Your grace. Teach me to love You deeply, not just speak the right words. Renew me from the inside out. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Ok, now, as you step into this day, remember: God’s peace can anchor you through any storm. He’s not ‘a-lookin’ for polished lips. He’s after a surrendered heart. And thank goodness, because some days my lips say, “Hallelujah,” while my heart’s wanderin’ around like a loose goat in the neighbor’s garden. But His grace still holds steady every time.
