When Trouble Knocks
Hey there, friend, it’s mighty good to have you trottin’ by for a lil’ ol’ visit. So, pull up a rocker on this ol’ front porch, and let’s swat a few of those pesky mosquitoes while we git to talkin’ about trouble. Trouble has a way of showin’ up like a rascally lil’ ol’ raccoon that sneaks right into your chicken coop at midnight. It don’t knock, it don’t call ahead, and it certainly don’t care if you just swept the porch. Yet Psalm 34:17 says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” That’s the kind of promise that’ll make you shout louder than an ol’ silly rooster that thinks the control of just when the sun rises belongs only to him.
Nahum 1:7 says, “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who trust in Him.” Friend, that means when trouble comes stompin’ through your life like an ol’ muddy hog that believes your real nice livin’ room rug is a welcome mat, God is not confused, surprised, or pacing the heavens. He knows you. He sees you. He hears you.
Trouble will either drive us toward God or send us runnin’ away like a lil’ ol’ squirrel that just realized it ran up the wrong tree. The trouble itself doesn’t decide that. Our view of God does. If we think He’s somehow the source of our trouble, we’ll pout, stomp, and throw spiritual elbows like an ol’ billy goat that refuses to be herded. But if we see Him as the source of our peace, we’ll draw near to Him because James 4:8 promises that “when we draw near to God, He draws near to us.” Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us that “when we bring everything to Him with thanksgiving, His peace guards our hearts and minds” like an ol’ loyal farm dog that never leaves the porch.
Friend, if you’re walkin’ through some kind of trouble today, let it be pushin’ you closer to God, not farther away. In His presence you’ll be findin’ answers, comfort, and the kind of peace that doesn’t depend on your circumstances. True peace don’t come from the absence of trouble. It comes from the presence of God, who delivers, steadies, and strengthens His people.
You’ve gotta be thinkin’ of God’s goodness like it’s a real steady ol’ oak tree that’s plum stood through storms, droughts, and critters that tried to chew up its bark. It’s still there, still mighty strong, still sheltering everything that rests beneath it. Trouble may git to rattlin’ your branches, but it can’t uproot you when your roots are in Him. So, lean on in, hold real tight, and put your trust in the One who hears your every cry.
Father, when trouble comes tromping through my life, help me run straight to You. Remind me that You hear me, You know me, and You deliver me. Fill me with Your peace and steady my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Well now, I do declare, friend, until next time, you gotta be workin’ to let your troubles be smaller than a lil’ ol’ field mouse and your trust in God stronger than an ol’ barn door in a Texas windstorm. Trouble may come at you like an ol’ Brahma bull that thinks the gate was left open so he can trot over and visit the neighbor’s cows, but God keeps right on standin’ mighty firm, faithful, and unshaken. His presence is like a bright lantern on a dark night that refuses to flicker even when the coyotes start howlin’ and the hoot owls get mighty chatty. When life rattles your nerves like a lil’ ol’ woodpecker that insists on hammerin’ the side of your barn at sunrise, remember that the Lord is your stronghold, your shelter, and your peace. He’s the One who hears, the One who knows, and the One who delivers. Lean in and trust Him because His goodness will outlast every storm, every setback, and every critter that tries to chew on your hope.
With joy,
Gwen
