The Road You Avoid

Well, glory be, friend, come on up this ol’ front porch lookin’ like you’ve been wanderin’ through a mountain holler and just spotted a lil’ cabin with smoke curlin’ from the chimney and a welcome that plum feels older than the hills themselves. I’m mighty glad you came by here today. Ease yourself into this moment and breathe real deep, the way a thoughtful ol’ groundhog settles on a sun‑warmed rock even when a jittery lil’ wood thrush hops circles around its tail. Proverbs 4:14-15 tells us, “Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it. Turn away from it and pass on.” To deepen that wisdom, Psalm 119:133 says, “Direct my footsteps according to your word. Let no sin rule over me.” Them two verses stand together like a pair of old trail markers carved into opposite sides of a weathered oak pointin’ a wanderin traveler away from the thickets of trouble and toward the clear, open path that leads to life.

Friend, temptation don’t always come struttin’ in with a neon sign and a marching band. Sometimes it comes tiptoein’ in real quiet like a sly lil’ ol’ fox slippin’ through tall grass. Studies show affairs often start in places that look innocent enough. A friendly conversation. A workplace joke. A harmless message online. But Proverbs tells us not to even think about walkin’ that path. Turn away and keep on movin’.

We’re all mighty vulnerable, but we can also run. Joseph didn’t stand around negotiatin’ with Potiphar’s wife. He bolted so fast he left his cloak behind. That there’s what you do when danger starts sniffin’ around your doorstep. You flee. You shut the laptop. You step back from that conversation. You guard your heart like a wise ol’ goose guards its nest.

Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “God is faithful. He will not allow temptation to overpower us. He will always provide a way out.” And Psalm 119:133 adds, “God can direct our footsteps so sin does not get the upper hand.” That means we don’t fight temptation alone. We walk with the One who downright knows every trap and every escape route.

Friend, if your defenses are weakenin’, if your boundaries are gettin’ fuzzy, if your heart is wanderin’ toward places you know are dangerous, take corrective steps now. True love for Christ means hatin’ what destroys us. Turn away. Keep movin’. Choose the brighter path.

Father, guide my steps and guard my heart. Strengthen me where I am weak and steady me where I am tempted. Direct my path according to Your word and keep sin from ruling over me. Free me, forgive me, and lead me into Your light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Well, by thunder,  friend, this lil’ ol’ porch chat has said what it needed to say, and now the rest of your day is standin there like a wide open trail waitin for a sure‑footed ol’ moose to wander through with purpose. Step forward with the kind of clarity a hawk shows when it lifts off a branch and heads straight for open sky. Carry God’s wisdom the way a seasoned ol’ tortoise carries its shell, steady and unbothered by whatever rustles in the brush. And move on with a heart that sho’-nuff’ knows temptation might holler from the shadows, but it never gits to steer your steps, because the One who leads you walks right beside you every step of the way.

With joy,

Gwen
