The Joy Trail
Glory be, and pass me some of them grits, friend! Now you come right on up here on this ol’ front porch and settle your weary bones for a lil’ ol’ spell. Land sakes, it’s mighty good to see you today. If you could hear that feisty ol’ crow out there on the fence line fussin’ at a lil’ ol’ chipmunk that just stole his breakfast or smell some of that the sweet potato pie coolin’ on the windowsill over there, you’d plum know you’ve done stepped into a place where your heart can settle in real good. Let’s just sit for a spell and talk about somethin’ a whole lot deeper than a well dug by a determined ol’ farm mule. Psalm 119:56 says, “This is how I spend my life, obeying your commandments.” And tucked right beside it is Psalm 128:1, which tells us, “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways.” These two verses fit together real good like two loyal ol’ hounds sittin’ guard at the same front door.
Now, friend, folks today chase happiness like a jittery lil’ rabbit tryin’ to outrun its own shadow. They sho’-nuff’ grab at thrills, distractions, and shiny moments that sparkle like a trout flippin’ around in a creek. But those moments plum slip away quicker than a lil’ ol’ squirrel dartin’ up a hickory tree. The world promises happiness, but it downright delivers somethin’ about as flimsy as an ol’ scarecrow in a windstorm. The psalmist knew better. He said real joy comes from obeyin’ God’s commandments. Happiness just ain’t somethin’ you hunt down. It’s somethin’ that grows when your roots git to sinkin’ deep into holiness.
Scripture sho’-nuff’ backs this up again and again. Psalm 16:11 says, “You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of Your presence.” Proverbs 3:13–18 reminds us that “wisdom’s ways are satisfying and that those who hold her tightly are happy.” And Psalm 37:4 tells us to “delight in the Lord so He can shape our desires.” Ecclesiastes 2:24–25 teaches that “even simple pleasures like food, drink, and work are gifts from God.” Happiness ain’t found in chasin’ after what the world has offer. It’s plum found in walkin’ with the One who made the world.
Friend, unbelievers will never find true happiness because they keep right on diggin’ in dry soil. They chase counterfeits that look promisin’ but have no deep well beneath ‘em. The world’s happiness depends on good things happenin’. The believer’s happiness depends on a good God.
Father, help us choose Your way. Teach us to obey Your commandments with joy. Show us how to find satisfaction in Your presence and wisdom in Your Word. Shape our hearts so our happiness springs from holiness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ok now, friend, as you journey right on into the rest of your busy day, be carryin’ this truth like a sturdy walkin’ stick that won’t snap no matter how rocky the trail gets. Let God’s commandments steady you the way an ol’ oak tree steadies the hillside. Let His joy rise in you quicker than a startled ol’ pheasant when trouble comes callin’. And walk forward with the confidence of an ol’ plow horse that knows its path, trustin’ that real happiness grows wherever obedience takes good roots.
With joy,
Gwen
