The Heart’s Hidden Treasure

Well, howdy-do there, friend! Come right on up here on this ol’ front porch and make yourself right to home. Mercy me, it’s such a joy to see you stoppin’ in today. If you could hear that cranky ol’ woodpecker hammerin’ away at a pine stump like it plum owes him money or git to smellin’ the blackberry cobbler coolin’ beside the window over there, you’d plum know you’ve done come and right stepped into a place where your soul can git settled in real good. So, let’s sit a spell and chew on a truth that’s sturdier than an ol’ cantankerous mule. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” And tucked right in there with it is Joshua 1:8 which tells us, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night.” These here two verses fit together like two strong fence rails that keep a pasture safe.

Now, friend, I love seein’ a beat-up Bible. You know, one of them that looks like it’s plum survived a big ol’ stampede of barn cats. Pages all curled up. Corners all bent down. Notes plum scribbled everywhere like a lil’ ol’ squirrel ran across the page with lil’ muddy paws. A Bible like that tells a real story. It sho’-nuff’ says someone has been diggin’ real deep. It downright says someone has been feedin’ their soul the good stuff. But Scripture reminds us that just ain’t the shakin’, wavin’, or pointin’ at the Bible that matters the most. It’s the absolute hidin’ of God’s Word right in our hearts. That’s where the real strength comes from.

Jesus Himself showed us how powerful Scripture is. When the devil tempted Him in the wilderness, He plum answered with the Word every single time. Matthew 4:11 says, “Then the devil went away.” He sho’-nuff’ was no match for the truth tucked inside the heart of the Son of God. And friend, that same truth is available to us. We never know when temptation will sneak up on us like an ol’ shifty raccoon trying to tip over a trash can. But when God’s Word is hidden in our hearts, we’re plum ready.

Paul reminds us in Romans 10:14–15 that “people can’t believe unless someone tells them.” And someone can’t tell ‘em unless they sho’-nuff’ know the Word well enough to share it. When Scripture is stored in our hearts, it becomes a well we can draw from anytime, anywhere. It plum strengthens us, guides us, and equips us to bring good news with feet as beautiful as a lil’ ol’ deer trottin’ across a meadow at sunrise.

Father, help us tuck Your Word deep into our hearts. Give us a hunger to read it, a joy to memorize it, and a boldness to use it. Make Your truth our strength, our shield, and our steady guide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Well now, friend, as you git to headin’ on into the rest of your day, you’ve gotta be carryin’ God’s Word like a trusty ol’ pocketknife that plum never leaves your side. Let it steady you the way an ol’ oak tree steadies the hillside. Let it rise up in you quicker than a startled lil’ pheasant when trouble comes callin’. And walk forward with the confidence of an ol’  plow horse that knows the way home, trustin’ that every verse hidden in your heart is already sho’-nuff’ shapin’ your steps in ways only God can do.

With joy,

Gwen
