The Grip That Guides You

Welcome, friend, come on through that picket fence gate and step right on up to this ol’ front porch. Find a comfortable chair to ease yourself right into. Well, mercy, it’s a real fine pleasure to git to visit with you today. If this ol’ porch had a mind of its own, it’d be flappin’ its rockin’ chairs up and down like an excited flock of lil’ chicken hens tryin’ to greet you real proper-like. You look like someone who just might be carryin’ some real serious questions the way a determined ol’ armadillo carries a treasure it went and dug up under a pecan tree. So, git settled in, friend, because we’re about to go wanderin’ right into a truth that plum steadies the heart like a thick, warm quilt stitched by your grandma’s hands on a cold winter night.

For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear. I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13). That there verse sits at the center of comfort like a wise ol’ barn owl perched high up on a rafter. Many of us need to be lingerin’ on it, especially when life gits to feelin’ like a detour we never asked for. We wonder what God is doin’. We wonder why we’re here. We wonder why He ever allowed this twist or that turn. Yet Scripture paints a picture that’s real tender and strong. God don’t just walk beside you. He don’t just watch from a distance. He takes hold of your right hand and holds it real tight.

Think back to when you had to be crossin’ a busy street as a child. Your parents didn’t point and say, “Ok, now, good luck to you as you git across the street.” They downright grabbed your hand and held it real tight. They guided you through the danger. That’s plum exactly what God does in your detours. And while He holds tight toyour hand, He speaks courage right on into your fear. “Do not fear. I’ll help you.” Not figure it out for yourself. Not you should’ve seen this thing comin’. Just, I will help you, my child.

Isaiah 43:2 reminds us that “When we pass through waters, God is with us and the rivers will not sweep over us.” And Psalm 18:35 says, “You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me.” That there verse stands real firm like a boulder tucked deep into a mountain hillside that refuses to roll even when the river rages all around it. It tells us that God’s grip ain’t no kind of casual. It’s real sustainin’. It’s real protective. It’s mighty personal.

Whatever detour you might be facin’ today, remember this. Someone is holdin’ real tight to your hand. Someone who knows the way through. Someone who won’t be lettin’ go.

Father, steady my heart with Your presence. Help me trust Your grip when life feels uncertain. Teach me to walk with courage, knowing You hold my hand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Alright then, friend, as you stand up and git to moseyin’ on toward whatever’s waitin’ for you next, your courage can be standin’ stout like an ol’ rooster struttin’ across the barnyard thinkin’ he owns every inch of it. Your peace can settle in real easy like a sleepy hound dog curlin’ up on a warm porch step after a long day of sniffin’ around. Your hope can shine clear like lil’ fireflies dancin’ over a meadow on a summer night, blinkin’ their little hearts out. And your trust in God can carry you forward with the steady confidence of a big ol’ mountain ram that knows exactly where to place its hooves on a rocky ridge. So, go on now, friend, and be walkin’ with the sure and quiet knowin’ that God’s mighty hand is holdin’ real tight to yours.

With joy,

Gwen
