The Goodness in Grit
Well, flip my flapjacks and rattle the porch kettle, friend. Step right on up on this ol’ front porch like you just wandered out of a cottonwood clearing and spotted a cabin so friendly even that plump ol’ gopher over yonder looks like it’s been practicin’ a polite little shuffle just to greet you proper. I’m so glad you made your way over here. Settle yourself in real good, the way a thoughtful ol’ beaver settles on a smooth riverbank even when a jittery little meadow finch hops circles around its tail like it is runnin’ things around there. Romans 8:28 reminds us that, “God works all things together for good for those who love Him.” Isaiah 43:2 adds a comfortin’ truth, tellin’ us that “When we pass through deep waters, God will be with us.” Them verses stand together like two sturdy glowin’ trail lanterns perched on opposite ends of a woodland path, guidin’ every wanderin’ traveler toward the truth that God’s purpose holds steady even when life feels about as tangled as a lil’ ol’ calf tryin’ to nibble on a tumbleweed.
Friend, if we could design our own lives, most of us would skip the hard parts quicker than a silly lil’ goat dodgin’ a mud puddle. But Scripture teaches us that God has a purpose in every storm. Sometimes hardship is God’s way of doin’ a lil’ bit of soul cleanin’. Trouble has a way of bringin’ impatience, quick tempers, and old habits right up to the surface. The Holy Spirit uses tough seasons to smooth our rough edges and grow the fruit of the Spirit within us, just like Galatians 5:22-23 describes as it says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
Hard times also draw us close to God. When life is easy, we might wander off like a lil’ ol’ barn cat chasin’ butterflies. But when trouble hits, we find ourselves on our knees, seekin’ His companionship, His comfort, and His steady hand.
Friend, God’s desire is to be shapin’ us into the likeness of His Son. He wants us to know His love, walk in His strength, and trust His heart even when the road feels mighty rocky. Life brings trouble from all directions, but the common thread is God’s ability to use every trial for our good and His glory.
Father, steady my heart when life gets hard. Help me trust Your purpose even when I don’t understand it. Shape my character, deepen my faith, and draw me close to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Well friend, it’s my real sincere hope that this lil’ porch chat has settled into your spirit like a warm apple pie coolin’ out on a windowsill, and now the rest of your day is stretchin’ out like a bright open hillside callin’ a sure‑footed ol’ nanny goat toward clearer ground. Step into what comes next with the kind of quiet courage a meadow sparrow shows when it lifts off from a fence rail trustin’ the breeze to be carryin’ it. Carry God’s purpose with you the way a seasoned ol’ box turtle carries its home, steady and unbothered by whatever gits to rustlin’ in the brush. And move forward with a heart that plum knows even the pauses are mighty sacred places, because the One who guides you is sho’-nuff’ walkin’ right there beside you.
With joy,
Gwen
