Take the Whole Lamp

Well now, friend, pull up a rocker and settle yourself right here on this ol’ front porch. The Lord’s got a word today that’s richer than a pot of peach jam simmerin’ on a summer stove. The breeze is sashayin’ through these branches like it’s tryin’ to collect secrets from every leaf in this county, and a stubborn lil’ squirrel is over yonder fussin’ at a blue jay that’s perched on the fence like he owns stock in the place. Meanwhile, a hefty armadillo is waddlin’ past the woodpile actin’ like he’s inspectin’ the property lines, and a nervous little chipmunk keeps peekin’ out from behind a flowerpot like he’s takin’ attendance. Watchin’ that whole woodland committee reminded me of Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” It’s the Lord’s way of sayin’, “Friend, I’ll guide you, but you gotta take the whole lamp, not just the parts that glow pretty.”

Second Timothy 3:16 tells us, “All Scripture is God‑breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” Now let’s talk real plain here. Some parts of God’s Word slide down real easy, like butter meltin’ on a hot biscuit. Other parts feel more like tryin’ to swallow a spoonful of peanut butter without a glass of sweet tea nearby to help it go down better. And if we’re honest, a whole lot of us treat the Bible like a country buffet. We heap our plates real high with the verses that make us grin, skip the ones that poke at our pride, and pretend the ones that challenge us weren’t even on the table.

That’s why Acts 20:27 hits home. “For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.” The Lord never meant for us to nibble at Scripture like picky eaters at a church potluck. He wants us takin’ in the whole counsel, even the parts that stretch our comfort zones.

Christianity ain’t no cafeteria. God didn’t hand us His Word so we could pick the parts that match our mood. He gave us the whole thing because the whole thing is what shapes us. James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so, deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” All of it. Every bit of it, not just the verses that fit real nicely on a coffee mug.

Remember Jesus in Gethsemane? He prayed, “Not my will but yours be done.” That’s real submission. That’s real trust. That’s takin’ the whole plate, even when the portion looks bigger than your appetite.

So, friend, put down your tray. Stop selectin’. Start submitin’. God’s Word is the only map that’ll keep your feet real steady when life starts actin’ like an ol’ rooster tryin’ to go swimmin’ with the ducks.

Father, help me take Your Word as You gave it, whole and holy. Teach me to trust every part, obey every truth, and welcome every correction. Make my heart soft, my ears open, and my feet willing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Alright then, friend, as you walk off this porch today, let this truth settle in your heart the way a calm pond settles after a summer storm. God’s Word isn’t a snack you nibble on when you feel like it. It’s a feast meant to nourish every corner of your soul. When you take all of it, even the parts that stretch you, you’ll find strength growin’ in places you didn’t know needed it. And just like a steady lantern guides a traveler through a thick pine forest, the whole counsel of Scripture will guide you through every twist, turn, and detour life sends your way. Now go on, friend. Mind the critters, watch your step, and let God’s whole Word light your whole path.

With joy,

Gwen
