Light for the Lookin’
Well, howdy there, friend, how in the world are you? Come right on up here on this ol’ front porch and rest your weary bones for a lil’ ol’ spell. The Lord’s got a word today that’s richer than a pot of fig preserves bubblin’ on a back‑burner stove. The breeze is driftin’ through these ol’ pecan branches like it’s tryin’ to gather up some real good county‑wide gossip, and a feisty lil’ ol’ squirrel is over yonder fussin’ at an ol’ possum lumberin’ across the yard like it’s inspectin’ the place for a long‑term lease. Meanwhile, a plump tom turkey gobbler is struttin’ around the woodpile actin’ like it’s campaign season, and a jittery lil’ ol’ chipmunk keeps peekin’ out from behind the toolbox like it’s waitin’ for somethin’ worth reportin’. Watchin’ that whole critter committee reminded me of Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” It’s the Lord’s way of sayin’, “Friend, I’ll guide you, but you gotta take the whole lamp not just the parts that look pretty.”
Now, let’s git to talkin’ about findin’ God’s will. Years ago, a young theologian tried to stump a simple shoe cobbler who knew Scripture better than most folks know their own pantry shelves. When asked about the Urim and Thummim, that cobbler said, “I don’t rightly know, except they mean light and perfection. But if I’d just be usin’ and studyin’, I could find God’s will in God’s Word.” Friend, that there’s wisdom that’ll stick to your ribs.
You don’t need on kind of skywritin’. You don’t need no prophet knockin’ on your door. You don’t need to be tossin’ sticks, flippin’ coins, or waitin’ for goosebumps. You need to use and dig through your Bible.
Second Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” And here’s a fresh verse to deepen this here truth. Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the Lord gives wisdom, from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” But let’s anchor it even more. Psalm 25:9 says, “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.” That plum means God’s will isn’t tucked away like a prize in a cereal box. It’s sittin’ right there in His Word, waitin’ for you to open it, read it, and let it be shapin’ your steps.
Stop lookin’ for mystical signs. Start usin’ and diggin’ in. The answers are right there in front of you if you will just git to lookin’.
Father, help me seek Your will in Your Word. Make me faithful to read it, humble to receive it, and bold to obey it. Give me wisdom, understanding, and a heart that loves Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Alright then, friend, as you leave here today, hold this truth real close the way a farmer holds tight to a bright lantern on a real foggy mornin’. God’s Word isn’t a treasure you hunt for with a magnifying glass. It’s a real steady guide meant to lead you through every step you take. When you use it and study through it, you’ll find real clarity growin’ in places where so much confusion used to pitch a tent. And just like a river finds its way through a thick forest, God’s Word will carve a clear path for you every single day. Now go on out there, friend. Mind them critters, watch your step, and let His Word lead you sure and steady to the place He has ordained for you to be goin’.
