Steady in the Storm
Git yourself right on up here, friend. If this ol’ front porch gits to creakin’ too much, that just means it’s takin’ a moment to be sayin’, “Hello there!” So, pull that rocker over there up a little bit closer and settle in because we’re about to be watchin’ a flock of lil’ ol’ turkey gobblers attemptin’ synchronized walkin’. It’s plum wobbly, it’s real hilarious, and it’s exactly how life gits to feelin’ when trouble comes stormin’ into your life. Today we’re gonna be talkin’ about God’s ever‑present help, the kind of strength that holds steady even when life feels shakier than a newborn calf tryin’ to figure out how to stand on a muddy riverbank.
Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” And to deepen this truth, let’s tuck in Psalm 62:8, which says,“Trust in Him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us.” Friend, that’s a reminder that God doesn’t just show up. He leans in real close and knows exactly how to steady you.
Now, let’s brush off those little moths that think your shirt is a lighthouse and git to some real brass tacks in what we’re gonna be talkin’ about. Life has a way of throwin’ trouble at us like a mischievous ol’ goat that keeps testin’ the fence line for possible escape routes. Psalm 46:1-3 tells us that even if the earth shakes, the mountains tumble, and the waters roar, God is still our refuge. Isaiah 41:10 reminds us not to fear because He is with us. He strengthens us. He helps us. He holds us up with His righteous right hand. That there’s not poetic fluff. That’s a promise a whole lot sturdier than a river bluff that’s stood firm through a thousand years of spring floods.
The Christian life just ain’t no stroll through a quiet meadow. It’s more like tryin’ to herd a flock of chickens that keep wanderin’ toward the neighbor’s garden. Trials come to shape us, not sink us. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, “We are troubled but not distressed, perplexed but not in despair, persecuted but not forsaken, cast down but not destroyed.” Friend, that’s God’s presence in motion. Nahum 1:7 fits right here like an ol’ huntin’ hound dog fits ridin’ in the back of a pickup truck: “The Lord is good. He’s a stronghold. He knows those that trust Him.”
And when you walk through valleys that feel darker than a holler at midnight, Isaiah 43:2 promises that the waters will not overflow you and the fire will not burn you. Nothing surprises God. Not your trouble. Not your fear. Not your weariness. He is present, steady, and strong.
Father, thank You for being my refuge and strength. Thank You for Your Spirit that comforts me when my heart feels worn thin. Teach me quietness, teach me stillness, and help me trust Your abiding presence every step of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
My stars, friend, you gotta git movin’ now and go right on into your day like a lil’ ol’ fox that finally found the trail it was sniffin’ for. God’s help is already stretchin’ out right beside you. Walk forward with growin’ energy like a lil’ deer that finally decided to stop tiptoein’ and start trottin’. Trouble may rattle the world, but it can’t rattle the God who holds you. And He’s walkin’ every step right along with you.
With joy,
Gwen
