Soul Snacks

Howdy, there, Friend, come over here and pull up a chair so you can get settled in real good like a scavenging raccoon discovering an unattended picnic basket ‘cause today’s theme comes wrapped in one big, ol’ warm truth from Genesis 18:5, which says, “And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts.” That’s about as comforting as finding an extra warm, buttered biscuit at the bottom of the basket when you thought they were all gone.

Abraham was sitting in the heat of the day, probably sweating like a goat in a wool coat, when three visitors showed up. Instead of pretending he was not home, he jumped up and offered them water, shade, and a little something to nibble on. That’s some real hospitality with heart!

Genesis 18:1-8 paints the whole big picture. Abraham ran ‘round like a rooster chasing sunrise. Sarah kneaded dough faster than a squirrel dodgin’ a huntin’ hound dog. A young man prepared a calf while Abraham set out butter and milk. It was a feast under the terebinth trees, and Abraham stood by like a proud host watchin’ his guests enjoy every bite. What Abraham offered was simple, yet God used it to reveal something extraordinary. The Lord Himself was present, and Abraham’s small morsel became a moment of divine refreshment.

Psalm 19:7 reminds us, “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.” Friend, that means God’s Word is better than a nap on a shady porch swing, better than broth simmered by someone who knows what they are doing, and better than a cup of tea on a cold morning. When life feels hotter than a hen sittin’ on a lantern, God offers daily morsels from Scripture that cool the spirit and steady the heart.

A. T. Pierson once said he would take one chapter of God’s Book over all other books combined. That’s because the Word restores us. It reminds us who we are and who He is. It is nourishment for days when we feel like a possum desperately trying to cross a four lane highway. If you need refreshment or restoration, open His Word today. There’s always a wonderful morsel just waiting to strengthen and nourish you.

Friend, God’s refreshment doesn’t always come in grand banquets alone. Sometimes it’s a quiet morsel verse that settles your spirit like a deer finally finding still water to quench its thirst. Sometimes it’s a promise that steadies you like a sturdy fence post standing tall in a mighty Texas windstorm. Sometimes it’s a whisper that reminds you that you are seen, known, and loved. Keep returning to His Word ‘cause every morsel, no matter how big or how small, deeply matters.

Father, thank You for the daily bread of Your Word. Refresh our hearts, restore our spirits, and help us recognize the moments when You meet us under the trees of our everyday lives. Teach us to welcome Your presence with joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now friend, get to going on through the rest of your day like a lil’ barn cat that just found the warmest patch of sunshine on the window sill. You’ve got to be lettin’ God’s Word refresh you, steady you, and fill you with the kind of joy that even the noisiest rooster cannot rattle. And when the road feels long and the load feels heavy, take a moment to recall that the same God who fed Abraham’s guests under the trees of Mamre is still feeding weary travelers today, one soul refreshing morsel of His supernaturally inspired Word at a time as there is something new that restores your soul each time you return to it.

With joy,

Gwen
