Small Seeds, Big God
Well, now, friend, why don’t you wander on up this porch and settle yourself for a minute before that bold little chipmunk on the rail decides you look like the kind of person who keeps snacks in their pockets. We are about to stroll through a truth sturdier than a cast iron skillet that has survived more church potlucks than anyone can count. Ecclesiastes 11:6 says, “Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you do not know if profit will come from one activity or another or maybe both.” That is Scripture’s way of saying, “Do your part and let God handle the harvest.”
Take Saul for example. Before he ever became the apostle Paul, he was stirring up trouble like a banty rooster who woke up on the wrong side of the coop. He chased believers all over the countryside and those poor folks scattered like quail avoiding a fox with fast feet. But here is the twist only God could write. Everywhere those believers scattered, the gospel scattered right along with them. Saul thought he was shutting the church down, but he was actually helping it spread faster than dandelion fluff caught in a strong prairie wind.
And then there was Stephen. Bless him, he did not have a long ministry. He did not write a book of the Bible. He did not headline a revival. But his bold testimony lit a holy spark in Saul’s heart that the Holy Spirit fanned into a flame. If Stephen’s only convert was Saul, then friend, that is what you call a heavenly success story with eternal ripple effects.
Your ministry might feel small. You may not reach thousands. You may not reach hundreds. You may feel like a single firefly blinking in a wide dark field. But you never know who is watching. You never know which seed will sprout. You never know which quiet act of obedience will echo into eternity.
That is why Ecclesiastes 11:6 tells us to keep right on planting. Keep right on sowing. Keep right on showing up. God handles the results. That part is not your responsibility.
Father, help me sow faithfully even when I cannot see the harvest. Use my words, my actions, and my life to plant seeds that honor You. Take what I offer and multiply it for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now friend, as you step back into your day like a determined beaver dragging a log twice its size, remember this. Your job is planting. God’s job is growing. No seed planted for Him is ever wasted. Keep sowing, keep trusting, and let the Lord surprise you with what He brings up from the soil.
With joy,
Gwen
