Keeping Pace With the Lord

Well, now, friend, come on over and settle yourself on this front porch for a little ol’ spell ‘a-fore that curious blue jay hop‑skippin’ on the porch rail decides you look like someone who owes him rent ‘cause we are about to go strolling into a truth sturdier than a cast‑iron skillet that has survived three generations of biscuits. Walkin’ with God is a whole lot like tryin’ to walk beside someone whose stride is not quite like your own. You think you are matchin’ steps, then suddenly you are out ahead like a rooster struttin’ too proud,or laggin’ behind like a possum who overslept and is still rubbin’ its eyes.

I get it. When I walk with my husband, I always end up ahead of him. I promise myself I will slow down, then next thing I know, I am out front again like a hound dog who caught a whiff of somethin’ interesting. Many believers do the same thing with God. Some run ahead because they cannot stand waitin’ on His timing. They take matters into their own hands and end up tangled like a goat stuck in a fence. Others drag behind Him, hesitant and nervous, like a deer tryin’ to decide if the meadow is safe for grazing.

But Scripture gives us a simple picture. Genesis 5:22 says, “Enoch walked with God.” Not ran. Not stalled. Walked. And Galatians 5:25 tells us, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Then 1 John 2:6 brings it home by sayin’, “Those who say they live with God should live their lives as Jesus did.” That means matchin’ His pace. Prioritizin’ His Word. Spendin’ time with His people. Livin’ like Jesus lived.

Keepin’ in step with the Spirit means makin’ room for God on purpose. Not waitin’ for spare time to magically appear like a rabbit poppin’ out of a magician’s hat. It means openin’ your Bible even when sleep sounds sweeter. It means prayin’ even when your to‑do list is hollerin’ louder than a crow at sunrise. It means choosin’ obedience even when your comfort zone is throwin’ a fit.

Father, help me walk with You at Your pace. Slow me down when I rush ahead and nudge me forward when I fall behind. Teach me to live as Jesus lived. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now, friend, as you journey on right back into your day like a determined turtle makin’ its way across the yard with purpose in every step, keep in mind that walkin’ with God is a real privilege. It shapes your heart, steadies your soul, and fills your life with richness no shortcut can offer. Keep in step with Him, and you will find yourself exactly where you need to be every single time.

With joy,

Gwen
