Sheltered by His Name
Well, howdy-do there, friend, come on up this ol’ front porch like you’re plum steppin’ into a homey lil’ ol’ cabin where the rockin’ chairs git to creakin’ a comfortin’ welcome and the smell of hot biscuits is floatin’ through the air like a friendly wave. Land sakes, I’m so glad you took a moment to come stoppin’ by here. If you were any more welcome, that lil’ ol’ raccoon over yonder that guards my wood pile would trot right over here and offer you his most prized pinecone. Settle yourself down for a lil’ ol’ spell, friend, because we’re about to be makin’ a journey into a truth that’s a whole lot steadier than an ol’ onery mule that refuses to even budge and sweeter than fresh honey drippin’ right off the comb.
Psalm 91:1–2 says, “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord. He alone is my refuge, my place of safety. He is my God, and I trust Him.” The psalmist starts by callin’ God the Most High, El Elyon, the One that owns every sunrise, every breath, and every critter that scampers across the forest floor. Nothin’ we have is really ours. Not our talents, not our treasures, not even our next heartbeat. Realizin’ that truth plum settles us into humility like a lil’ ol’ calf curlin’ up in soft hay.
Then, he speaks of the Almighty, Shaddai, the God that’s not just livin’ but also givin’. He’s the One that pours out strength when we feel wobblier than a lil’ ol’ newborn colt tryin’ to stand. He invites us to ask for anything, anytime, anywhere. His shadow ain’t ever no kind of a place of fear. It’s plum a real beautiful place of rest.
Next, comes the Lord, Yahweh, the name God gave Moses from a burning bush that refused to burn up. “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:14). Yahweh means God defines Himself. Nobody else gets to. Not circumstances. Not opinions. Not fear. We know Him by what He says about Himself, not by what life tries to tell us.
Then the psalmist says, “He is my God,” Elohim, the plural name pointing to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit workin’ together like the strongest three strand cord you ever saw. And the Lord gives us another verse to deepen this truth. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run into it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10). His name ain’t just a title. It’s sho’-nuff’ a refuge.
Father, thank You for being my shelter, my strength, my refuge, and my God. Help me trust Your names, Your character, and Your promises. Teach me to rest under Your shadow with confidence and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Alright then, friend, may the Lord steady your heart today with the calm strength of a river stone that’s done held its place through a thousand seasons. Let His presence settle around you like cool shade under a towerin’ cedar. And may His protection wrap around your life with the gentle certainty of a mama bird guardin’ her nest from the wind. Wherever your day carries you, let His name be the shelter that plum keeps your spirit anchored and your hope shinin’ brighter than a trail of fireflies lightin’ up a dark country path. Go on now, friend, and carry His refuge with you with every step you take.
With joy,
Gwen
