Safe Beneath His Wings
Well hidey-ho now, friend, you come right on up here on this here ol’ front porch like you’re moseyin’ into a country homestead where the screen door snaps shut behind you and the smell of fried apples drifts out like it’s been waiting all day long just for you. Mercy me, I’m so doggone glad you made it over this way today. If you were any more welcome, that ol’ tom turkey gobbler right over yonder that struts around like he owns the yard would be marchin’ right on up and offerin’ you his very best tail feather. So, pull up a good, comfy chair, friend, because we’re gonna be wanderin’ right on into a truth that’s sho’-nuff’ sturdier than an ol’ barn beam and a whole lot gentler than a cool breeze rollin’ through a stand of cedar trees.
Psalm 91:4–5 tells us, “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.” The psalmist paints a wonderful picture of God coverin’ us with His awesome feathers and shelterin’ us with His mighty wings. It’s real tender, protective, and fierce all at once. It plum reminds me of that ol’ farmer who found his chicken hen burned in the fire, only to discover her little chicks still alive underneath her wings. That ol’ mother hen gave everything she had to shield her little ones. And the Lord does the very same for us, only with a strength no fire can overcome.
His promises are sho’-nuff’ our armor. His truth is certainly our shield. He tells us not to be fearin’ the terrors of the night or the arrows that fly in the day. And the Lord deepens this truth with another verse. “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and he knoweth them that trust in him” (Nahum 1:7). God ain’t just present. He’s sho-‘nuff’ protective. He’s not just aware. He’s downright attentive.
The devil fires flaming arrows at us. Fear. Doubt. Impure thoughts. Discouragement. Hatred. But God plum shields us. We’ll still face the hard seasons, but we’ll never face ‘em alone. His wings are wide enough. His promises are strong enough. His presence is near enough.
Father, thank You for covering me with Your wings and guarding me with Your promises. Help me trust Your protection, Your truth, and Your strength. Teach me to rest in Your shelter with courage and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Alright then, friend, may the Lord wrap His protection around you today with the steady devotion of a mama bear guardin’ her cubs in the woods. Let His promises settle over your heart like cool shade under a towerin’ oak tree. And may His courage rise up in you with the cheerful boldness of a lil’ ol’ blue jay that found a fresh patch of berries. Wherever your day carries you, let His strength wrap around you like a quilt stitched by lovin’ hands on a cold night. Go on now, friend, and walk boldly right in the safety of His wings.
With joy,
Gwen
