Serve Him Well

Land sakes, friend, pull up that ol’ rocker right over there and make yourself to home. If you were any more welcome, I’d have to shoo them chickens off the steps and holler out a greetin’ loud enough to wake a sleepy lil’ ol’ raccoon that’s been nappin’ under the rain barrel over yonder. I’m mighty glad you’re here. This ol’ front porch has heard its share of stories, and today it’s your turn to settle in while we let God’s Word stretch out across our hearts like a warm quilt fresh off the clothesline.

Psalm 119:10 tells us, “I seek You with all my heart. Do not let me stray from Your commands.” And David’s words to Solomon in 1 Chronicles 28:9 carry the same heartbeat. Both of ‘em plum remind us that knowin’ God just ain’t no casual hobby. It’s a full‑on pursuit, the kind that makes you lean in real close like a curious ol’ possum sniffin’ around a picnic basket.

David told Solomon to serve God with a loyal heart and a willin’ mind because God sees straight through every thought we’ve ever tried to hide behind a polite smile. And He promises that if we seek Him, He’ll be found. That ain’t no hide‑and‑seek with a lil’ ol’ squirrel that darts behind every tree. That’s a Father who wants to be known.

FirstChronicles 28:1-10 shows David gatherin’ the leaders, explainin’ that God chose Solomon to build the temple. It wasn’t about talent or résumé. It was downright about obedience. God wanted Solomon to know Him, serve Him, and follow Him with steadfast devotion.

And friend, that’s our callin’, too. When we serve others, whether it’s sweepin’ the church kitchen or helpin’ a neighbor wrangle a onery ol’ runaway goat, we’re servin’ God Himself. Galatians 5:13 says, “We’re called to serve one another humbly in love.” That there’s not just a suggestion. It’s a real spiritual workout that strengthens the inside of us more than any gym membership ever could.

Churches oughta be the friendliest places in town, but that depends on folks like you and me. If we’re not servin’, we’re not livin’. And when we serve with a willin’ heart, God uses us to build somethin’ mighty eternal, just like He used Solomon.

Father, thank You for calling me to serve You with a loyal heart and a willing mind. Teach me to seek You with all my heart and to serve others with joy. Strengthen my spirit as I obey You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Well now, friend, as you make the journey off into your daily doin’s, you gotta be makin’ sure that your heart stays tuned in to God like a wise ol’ hoot owl that sho’-nuff’ knows exactly when to be hootin’. You gotta be lettin’ your willingness to be servin’ Him be risin’ up like a lil’ ol’ barn cat that always shows up right when it’s needed. And you gotta then be lettin’ your service shine brighter than a glowin’ lantern hangin’ on a porch rail at dusk. Go on now, you gotta be carryin’ a loyal heart with you, too. God’s got good work lined up for you, and you’re just the one He’s countin’ on to get it done.
