Light that Opens the Eyes
Well, pluck my fiddle strings, friend! You’ve done gone and wandered on up over here like a lil’ ol’ possum lookin’ for a quiet corner to rest his weary lil’ ol’ bones for a spell. Come settle yourself right here on this on this ol’ front porch now. I’ve been thinkin’ about spiritual blindness this mornin’, the kind that sneaks up on folks the way a sneaky lil’ ol’ raccoon come slinkin’ up on a berry patch when nobody is lookin’. Some people can stand right in front of Jesus, see His goodness, hear His truth, watch His miracles, and still stay about as blind as a lil’ ol’ mole diggin’ under a woodpile.
John 12:37 says, “Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in Him.” That verse is somethin’ to ponder. Jesus stood right there, teachin’, healin’, lovin’, and yet their hearts stayed shut plum tighter than an ol’ barn door swollen from a big summer rainstorm. They saw the light but refused to open their eyes.
Spiritual blindness ain’t just confusion. It’s a heart that refuses to surrender. And Ephesians 4:18 says, “They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God.” Friend, that there means some folks wander through life like a lil’ ol’ deer lookin’ for a trail in real thick fog. They try to figure things out on their own, carry their sin like a heavy feed sack, and never realize Jesus is plum standin’ right there ready to lift the load.
But here’s the truth. God don’t pry open anybody’s eyes. He don’t drag a person into belief the way an ol’ farmer drags a stubborn lil’ ol’ goat out of the garden. He invites ‘em. He calls ‘em. He shines His light on ‘em. But He waits for ‘em to respond. Psalm 119:18 says, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.” Friend, that is the heart cry of someone ready to see clearly. When a person finally wants God’s truth, He opens their eyes wider than sunrise spillin’ over a mountain ridge. So, when a person finally says, “Jesus, I need You,” the darkness cracks open like a walnut under a hammer. Light pours in. Truth becomes clear. And the heart wakes up like an ol’ rooster realizin’ it’s finally mornin’.
Father, thank You for openin’ our eyes and softenin’ our hearts. Thank You for callin’ us out of darkness and into Your marvelous light. Help us pray for those still blind and trust You to reveal Yourself to them. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Friend, you go on now and git yourself steppin’ out on that path that takes you back to the doin’s of your day with your eyes clearer than a lil’ ol’ hawk circlin’ above a meadow. Let the Lord’s truth be guidin’ you like a glowin’ lantern swingin’ on a mountain trail. Walk real steady, look mighty sharp, and keep your heart sho’-nuff’ open because the good Lord has more light to be showin’ to you than you’ve ever imagined.
With joy,
Gwen
