Pray Like You Mean It

You ever get so doggone worn out from ‘a-tryin’ to run your own life that you finally have to holler, “Alright, Lord, You just go ahead and do the drivin’!” The moment you scoot on over to the passenger seat, peace slips right in like a polite church lady, and joy plops down like your favorite aunt, who never waits to be invited. Suddenly life stops ‘a-feelin’ like you’re herding cats during a thunderstorm.

You know, Mark 13:33 tell us, “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.” And prayer’s a funny thing. Everybody says they believe in it, but half of us treat it like a fast‑food window. “Yes, Lord, I’ll take a miracle, large fries, and could You hurry? I’m double‑parked.” Then we wonder why we feel spiritually hungry an hour later.

And then comes the big question: “If God already knows everything, why do I have to pray?” Well, buttercup, that’s like saying, “Mama knows I love her, so I’ll just never call again.” Good luck with that. Relationship requires conversation.

So, scoot a little ‘ole bit closer on this here porch swing, and let’s look at four real good reasons prayer matters.

First, we pray because Jesus said so (Luke 18:1). And when the Son of God gives instructions, that’s not a suggestion. It’s a command with a smile. Jesus prayed constantly. If He needed it, we definitely do.

Second, prayer is how God hands us things He’s been ‘a-wantin’ to give us. James said, “You do not have because you do not ask” (James 4:2). Translation: “Baby, you never even mentioned it.” God’s not a vending machine, but He sure loves a heart aligned with His will.

Third, prayer is how we body‑slam worry. Philippians 4:6 tells us to “bring everything to God”. Prayer isn’t pretendin’ we’re fine. It’s ‘a-draggin’ our fears, our mess, and our “bless‑my‑heart” moments to the Father and ‘a-sayin’, “Here. I can’t, but You can.”

Fourth, prayer keeps us ready for Jesus’ return (Matthew 13:3). Some folks get jittery ‘a-thinkin’ about the end times; others are already ‘a-sittin’ on their suitcases. Prayer steadies both. It keeps our eyes on Heaven instead of on those ‘ole headlines.

There are a thousand reasons to pray, but here’s the sweetest one of all: Jesus is ‘a-wantin’ a real relationship with you (John 15:15). And He’s a’wantin’ some real good friendly relationship talk with ya’, too.

So today, go ahead and ramble, whisper, cry, and laugh. Whatever ya’ do, you can be real sure that He’s ‘a’-listenin’, too.

Father, thank You for inviting me into conversation with You each day. Teach me to pray with honesty and courage. Help me trade worry for worship and follow Your will over mine. Draw me close to hear Your whisper and bold to obey it. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

So, friend, when you finally surrender to God’s plan and stitch prayer right on into your day like Grandma sews patches on a well‑loved quilt, peace and joy don’t just drop by for a polite visit, they haul in their suitcases, kick off their shoes, and settle in like kinfolk who plan to stay for a spell.

With joy,

Gwen
