God Uses Ordinary People
Some mornings you wake up feeling like a rusty, old pickup that needs a running start just to roll out of the driveway. On days like that, take a deep breath and remember: God’s already up, already working, and already walking beside you. He knows your heart better than you know your grocery list.
Take Saul, for example. Scripture over in I Kings introduces him like he’s the cover model for Israel’s Most Eligible Bachelor. Tall, rich family, good hair, basically the guy who never had to wait in line for anything.
Then, there’s David, a sweet kid, who played the harp and smelled like sheep. His own family forgot to invite him to the “choose the next king” party. If Saul was the shiny sports car, David was the dusty, trusty VW Beetle that somehow always starts.
But here’s the twist: God wasn’t shopping for shiny. God was looking for surrendered.
David’s psalms read like pages from a heart‑wide‑open journal. “The Lord is my shepherd… He renews my strength” (Psalm 23:1,3). That’s a man who knew where home was, and when he messed up, and boy, did he, he didn’t hide it. He ran straight to God with a trembling voice pleading, “Wash me clean” (Psalm 51:2-3). Saul puffed up; David knelt down. One got rejected. One got restored.
It seems that God has a soft spot for ordinary folks who lean hard on Him. Always has. Always will. Second Chronicles 16:9 says, “His eyes roam the whole earth looking for hearts fully turned His way”, not perfect hearts, not impressive hearts, just willing hearts.
Maybe today you feel more like “David in the sheep field” than “Saul in the spotlight.” Good. That’s exactly the kind of person God loves to use to shake up a generation. So, let His strength shine through your cracks. Let His love leak out of your life in ways that make people squint and say, “Now that had to be God.”
Father, thank You for using ordinary people like me to fulfill Your extraordinary plans. Help me to stay willing, humble, and ready for Your purpose. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen
“Start fresh today, friend. Drop yesterday’s worries like a sack of wet laundry and step forward into the hope God’s hand is holdin’ out to you right this minute. And don’t you forget, just like 1 Corinthians 1:27 reminds us, “God loves to use the plain‑as‑cornbread, everyday, ordinary folks to outsmart the mighty and confound the fancy.” He picks the ones the world overlooks and says, ‘Yep, that’s who I’m gonna use.’
So, don’t you count yourself out. If you feel simple, small, or like nothin’ special, well bless your boots, that just means you’re exactly the kind of person God likes to work wonders through. Go ahead and step into this day with your head up and your heart open. He’s got a purpose with your name on it, and He’s mighty good at turnin’ ordinary into holy!”
With joy,
Gwen
