Go on and Laugh…
You know the Bible says, “A joyful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:17), and honey, the Lord wasn’t being poetic. He meant actual medicine, the kind your insurance won’t argue about, and your pharmacist won’t give you that “bless your little heart” look.
Somewhere between childhood and paying bills, we lose our laugh. Kids will cackle at anything: sneezes, hiccups, a cricket doing the two‑step, or Uncle Larry tripping over his own feet again. They laugh like it’s their full‑time job. Meanwhile, grown folks act like joy is locked behind the counter at Walmart next to the expensive vitamins.
But God wired laughter right into our bones like a little bottle of heavenly Tylenol tucked under the ribcage, and science, bless its slow‑moving heart, finally caught up. After World War II, researchers studied orphans in Germany. The kids who got affection grew taller, healthier, and stronger. Turns out hugs and giggles don’t just warm your heart. They build you up from the inside out.
Imagine that. God said it thousands of years ago, and science just now turned in its homework.
And here’s the part that tickles me: God Himself laughs. Scripture flat‑out says so.
“He who sits in the heavens laughs…” (Psalm 2:4).
“The Lord laughs…” (Psalm 37:13).
Even Proverbs 1:26 says He’ll laugh right along with us.
If the Maker of galaxies can chuckle at the world’s chaos, surely we can laugh at burnt biscuits and flat tires.
And He doesn’t just laugh. He wants you to laugh too:
“He will yet fill your mouth with laughter” (Job 8:21).
“Our mouths were filled with laughter…” (Psalm 126:2).
So, maybe today, instead of letting stress dry you up like week‑old cornbread, you could choose joy. Maybe you let yourself laugh, one of those deep, belly‑shaking, eye‑watering laughs that rattles the windows and scares the dog.
Lord, help me to trade my worries for Your joy. Restore my laugh, loosen my spirit, and let Your cheerful medicine flow through me until it spills over onto everyone around me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Truth is, a good laugh is one of the simplest ways to show the victory God’s given because it’s God‑prescribed, heaven‑approved, and soul‑healing. So, let me ask you, real gentle-like: Have you laughed today? Not a polite chuckle, but a real, shoulders‑shaking, eyes‑watering laugh? If not, sugar, go ahead and ask the Lord to pour a little of His joy back into your spirit ‘cause He’s mighty generous with it!
With joy,
Gwen
