Eyes for the Hidden Hurts
Howdy there, friend, land sakes alive, come on up this here ol’ front porch and rest yourself a spell. I’ve been lookin’ forward to your footsteps crunchin’ up this path like a curious lil’ ol’ chipmunk that finally decided to quit fussin’ with pinecones and come visit. Pull up that rocker that creaks louder than an ol’ barn door that’s seen more winters than it cares to count. Mercy me, it’s a pleasure to have you here, and I reckon today’s word is fixin’ to settle into your heart like a warm quilt fresh off the line on a cool mountain mornin’.
Psalm 41:1 says, “Blessed is he who considers the poor.” Friend, that verse slips into the soul like a ladle of hot stew on a cold night. Weakness plum shows up in folks the way lil’ ol’ critters show up around a farm. Some weaknesses are plain as a limpin’ ol’ hound that’s been through too much. Others hide themselves like a lil’ sly fox tucked deep in the brush, quiet but real. Some folks carry burdens heavier than a water trough filled to the brim, and you’d never know it because they plum smile like everything is fine. But God sees it all. He sees the weakness in us and the weakness in others, and He calls us to notice what He already knows.
Romans 15:1 reminds us that “the strong are called to bear with the failings of the weak.” That truth settles deep, steady as a cedar tree that has stood through a hundred storms. And Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Friend, that verse reaches right into the tender places and reminds us that helping others is not optional. It is holy. It’s the kind of goodness that shows up like a barn cat that refuses to leave your side when you are feelin’ low.
Weakness downright takes all kinds of shapes. Some folks wrestle with habits that cling tighter than sticker burrs on a wool coat. Some struggle with choices that keep trippin’ ‘em up like a stump hidden in tall grass. Some carry wounds so deep they hide plum ‘em like a lil’ ol’ squirrel hides its stash of nuts. But God sees every doggone bit of it, and He invites us to step into His kindness and share it with others. When we help the weak, we sho’-nuff’ shine His goodness the way sunlight slips through tall pines after a long storm.
Father, make my heart tender toward those who struggle. Help me notice the quiet burdens folks carry and give me wisdom to help with kindness, patience and truth. Strengthen me to bear the weight of others’ needs and point them to Your transforming love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ok, then, friend, now that this truth has sho’-nuff’ settled inside you like a warm glow from a lantern hung high on a mountain cabin wall, your day ahead is already shaped by it. You’ve gotta be holdin’ compassion the way a careful farmer holds a newly hatched chick, mindful of its tiny heartbeat. You’ve gotta be carryin’ wisdom the way an ol’ tortoise carries its shell, steady and sure no matter what rustles in the grass. You’ve gotta be livin’ out kindness the way a gentle deer moves through a quiet clearin’, aware of every life around it. And you’ve gotta be walkin’ in faith the way a seasoned woodsman trusts the trail beneath his boots, knowin’ the One who made the path knows exactly where it leads. Friend, you’ve gotta be usin’ this here truth like a trusted tool that helps to shape every moment into somethin’ worth keepin’ and makin’ a real good difference for somebody else in this here ol’ world.
With joy,
Gwen
