When Your Heart Finds Home
Well, push that creaky ol’ gate open and come rest your weary bones on this ol’ front porch, friend. The tea’s done been poured, the porch swing’s squeakin’ in harmonic rhythm, and there’s an ol’ squirrel on the rail clutchin’ to a pecan like somebody just read the will and left him the whole orchard. We spend a heap of life huntin’ for somethin’ to plum satisfy us, sometimes dartin’ from one thing to another like a lil’ ol’ rabbit inspectin’ every cabbage in the garden before realizin’ supper was right under its nose.
Then we find Jesus.
Song of Solomon 3:4 says, “I found Him whom my soul loves: I held Him, and would not let Him go.” There’s something mighty deep in those words. Christ ain’t merely another blessin’ among many. He is the One our hearts were made for.
We git to chasin’ comfort, recognition, possessions, plans, and people hopin’ one of ‘em will finally quiet that restless place inside us. Yet every earthly water well eventually runs shallow. But Jesus doesn’t, not ever.
That’s plum why Psalm 63:8 gives us this beautiful truth: “My soul follows hard after thee: thy right hand upholds me.” We cling to Christ, but here’s the wonder of it all. While we’re holdin’ on to Him, His hand is already plum holdin’ us.
The lil’ sparrow finds its nestin’ place. The lil’ deer finds water. The weary traveler finds home. And the soul finds its truest ever rest in Jesus.
Father, forgive me for searching in lesser things for what only You can provide. Draw my heart closer to Jesus. Teach me to treasure His presence above comfort, applause, possessions, or plans. Hold me steady when I wander, and make my deepest desire simply to remain near You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now, bless your heart, friend, and gather yourself up and stroll right on into whatever’s done left of your day. Don’t you go rummagin’ through them woods for acorns when God has already sho’-nuff’ set a feast before your soul. Stay real close to Jesus when the road gets mighty dusty and when the sun shines real bright. Hold onto Him dearly in the ordinary moments, not just the plum desperate ones. And when the world starts hollerin’ that you need somethin’ more, smile like an ol’ barn cat sittin’ beside a full cream bucket because you’ve already found the One your soul was sho’-nuff’ lookin’ for.
With joy,
Gwen
