Don’t Spend Today Waitin’ on Someday

Well now, aren't you a welcome sight for these ol' sore eyes today? So, wipe your shoes off real good, and come ease yourself on up here on this ol’ front porch, friend. The lemonade’s good and cold, the rockin’ chair’s behavin’ itself pretty good, and there’s a lil’ ol’ rabbit beside the garden sittin’ so still you’d think it was waitin’ for somebody to read the minutes from last Sunday’s business meetin’. Life moves mighty fast. One minute you’re plum wonderin’ what you’ll do when you grow up, and the next you’re sho’-nuff’ wonderin’ why your knees make all them noises when you stand up.

Moses prayed in Psalm 90:12, “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.” That ain’t meant to frighten us. It’s downright meant to wake us up.

Too many folks keep their real livin’ stored away for “someday.” Someday I’ll serve God. Someday I’ll make that call. Someday I’ll forgive. Someday I’ll enjoy what God has already given me. Trouble is, “someday” can scamper right on off quicker than a lil’ ol’ field mouse when the ol’ barn cat stretches.

James 4:14 says life is like a mornin’ mist that appears briefly and then disappears. Our days are mighty precious precisely because they ain’t unlimited.

That’s why Ecclesiastes 9:10 gives us this mighty powerful instruction: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” God hasn’t given us today merely to survive it. He’s downright given us people to love, work to accomplish, grace to share, prayers to pray, and opportunities to leave somethin’ eternal behind.

Father, teach me to treasure the days You give me. Keep me from postponing obedience, love, forgiveness, and service. Show me what matters eternally and give me courage to do it while the opportunity is here. Let my life bring You glory all the way home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now, git yourself on out there, friend, before today slips through the fence like a real skinny hog headed straight for the cornfield. Don’t save your kindness for next Tuesday or your callin’ for some grander season. Love somebody, encourage somebody, serve Jesus, and enjoy the blessin’s already sittin’ right there on your table. When evenin’ comes, may you be pleasantly tired from spendin’ the day on things worth carryin’ right on into eternity.

With joy,

Gwen
