When You Haven’t Got a Clue
Well, mercy me, friend, it’s mighty good to see you stoppin’ in today. So, duck under that big ol’ honeysuckle bush and come find yourself a real cool spot on this ol’ front porch. There’s enough confusion wanderin’ around today to make a lil’ guinea fowl forget which end of the yard contains supper. Sometimes life drops a problem in our lap so tangled that even an ol’ raccoon with ten clever fingers couldn’t pick the knots loose.
That’s exactly where King Jehoshaphat plum found himself. Surrounded, outnumbered, and fresh out of clever ideas, he prayed in 2 Chronicles 20:12, “We have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.”
Friend, that sho’-nuff’ might be one of the most honest prayers in Scripture.
We often think faith means havin’ an answer. Sometimes faith means admittin’, “Lord, I haven’t the foggiest notion.” We remember His faithfulness. We trust His timin’. We sho’-nuff’ grieve what hurts. We pray through tears. We praise before circumstances change. Most importantly, we keep our eyes fixed on Him.
And God doesn’t abandon us at the crossroads. Isaiah 30:21 promises, “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” God may not hand us a detailed road map of the next ten miles. Often He gives just enough light for bein’ able to see the next step.
That’s where the trust grows. Not in knowin’ everything, but in knowin’ the One leadin’ the way.
Father, when I don’t know what to do, keep my eyes fixed on You. Quiet my urge to fix what only You can handle. Help me remember Your faithfulness, trust Your timing, hear Your direction, and take the next step You place before me. Hold me steady while I wait. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now then, bless your lil’ ol’ heart, friend, gather up your courage and mosey right on back into the day without demandin’ a road map from here to Christmas. A lil’ whippoorwill don’t need tomorrow’s sunrise before it gits to singin’ tonight, and a creek don’t know every bend before headin’ downhill. You don’t need every answer to be followin’ the Shepherd. Keep your eyes lookin’ up, your ears wide open, and your next step mighty faithful. When Heaven says, “This is the way,” you’ve gotta be puttin’ your foot down right there and keep right on goin’.
With joy,
Gwen
