Go on and Ask
Well, land alive, friend, you done found yourself the right front porch to come visitin’ on. So, step right on through that gate, mind the tin bucket sittin’ by the steps, and set yourself down where the cool breeze can get at you. I’ve got a chair waitin’ that’s a whole lot steadier than a lazy ol’ mule standin’ on three legs in a feed shed, and there’s shade plenty enough to keep your thoughts from fryin’ like okra in July. Around this ol’ front porch, questions are welcome, boots are plum optional, and nobody’s gonna faint if you ask somethin’ mighty hard.
Isaiah 1:18 says, “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD.” That tells me God ain’t bothered by an honest mind. He don’t get nervous when you start pokin’ around up under the hood of your faith. Truth don’t need no dim lights and locked doors.
That’s sho’-nuff’ why Acts 17:11 says the Bereans “searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” They checked. They compared. They dug. And Scripture praised ‘em for it.
Sometimes we’re afraid one real hard question might knock faith over like an ol’ goat leanin’ on a weak fence. But real faith can take examination. In fact, the deeper you dig, the more often you hit bedrock.
Questions can become open doorways. Doubts can become real nice invitations. Honest searchin’ can take a faith that feels plum borrowed and make it deeply your own.
Father, thank You for welcoming my questions. Give me courage to seek truth, patience to study, and humility to listen. Strengthen my faith through honest searching, and let every question lead me closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now then, friend, don’t you be sneakin’ out from here quiet as a lil’ ol’ field mouse. Push that yard fence gate wide open, square your shoulders back, and go meet the day with your Bible open and your mind awake. A lantern ain’t insulted because you check the wick, and a good well don’t mind you drawin’ down deep to be gittin’ a drink of cool water. Ask the question. Follow the truth. And if the road twists through a briar patch or two before it opens into daylight, keep right on walkin’ because the Lord of truth is already right there waitin’ on you.
With joy,
Gwen
