Refined for His Purpose
Well, goodness gracious, friend, step right up on this ol’ front porch before that wind whips you around like a loose feed sack on a fence post. I’m mighty glad you’re here. Pull up that ol’ rocker that groans like a lil’ porcupine tryin’ to squeeze through a too‑tight hollow log and settle yourself in real comfortable like now. We’re about to wander through God’s Word together, and I reckon it’ll steady your heart better than a warm kettle of chicken soup simmerin’ on a wood-burnin’ stove.
Hebrews 12:10 tells us, “For our fathers indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.” Now, friend, God’s discipline can feel a whole lot like tryin’ to wrangle a jittery lil’ ol’ pheasant that plum wandered into the barn and now thinks it sho’-nuff’ owns the whole place because he downright refuses to leave. You clap your hands, you shuffle your boots, you wave your arms around like an ol’ squirrel that went and misplaced its courage, and that ol’ pheasant just flutters in circles like it’s rehearsin’ for a barnyard ticker-tape parade. But God never flutters around in confusion. He sho’-nuff’ knows exactly what He’s doin’, and He plum knows exactly what He’s shapin’ in us.
James 1:3 reminds us with the words, “the testing of your faith produces patience.” And Psalm 94:12 adds another layer when it says, “Blessed is the man whom You instruct.” God’s discipline ain’t no punishment. It’s purely preparation. It’s the steady hand of a Father who sho’-nuff’ sees what we can’t see and knows what we’re becomin’ long before we ever do.
Jonah surely learned that there lesson the mighty hard way. He ran away from God, caused a storm, got tossed overboard, and ended up inside a big ol’ fish that probably smelled pretty rotten like a barrel of crawfish shells sittin’ out after a July picnic. But inside that there belly, Jonah prayed. He plum repented. He sho’-nuff’ listened. And when he landed back on dry ground, he finally obeyed. Hardship didn’t crush him. It downright corrected him.
Friend, if you’re in a season that feels tighter than a lil’ ol’ raccoon wedged in a hollow stump, ask the Lord what He’s teachin’ you. Discipline ain’t God’s anger. It’s His love shapin’ you right on into somebody who downright reflects His holiness. Those that enjoy the privileges of His family must also embrace the trainin’ that comes with it.
Father, help me welcome Your discipline with trust instead of fear. Teach me what You want me to learn, shape my heart, and make me more like You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Well now, friend, there it is! It’s time for you to be gittin’ on off this here porch and right on back into your upcomin’ adventures for the day. You’ve gotta be walkin’ on out there with a spirit steadier than a wise ol’ hoot owl perched way up in the top of the highest tree overlookin’ the barnyard and a heart much lighter than a lil’ ol’ firefly dancin’ as the sun sets for the day. God’s mighty shapin’ hand is on you, and you’re goin’ forward as someone He’s makin’ so much stronger, wiser, and holier with every single step you take.
With joy,
Gwen
