Why We Stay When the Music Stops

Well now, friend, pull up a real comfy rocker and let me give you a mighty good ol’ front porch howdy that would make any ol’ granny fling open her cabin door and holler, “Land sakes, look who’s done come up the path!” I’m so cotton-pickin’ glad you stopped by here today. If you were any more welcome, that ol’ possum over yonder that likes to take a lil’ ol’ nap under my swing would stand up and offer you his seat. Now git settled in because we’re plum about to be wanderin’ through a patch of Scripture that sticks to the soul better than molasses on a hot biscuit.

John 13:35 says, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love is sho’-nuff’ the real glue. Not the fancy kind you buy at the hardware store that promises to hold a tractor together. I’m plum talkin’ about the kind that really holds people. The kind that keeps a church family from scatterin’ like a big ol’ flock of startled chickens. Folks may show up for preachin’, music, or programs, but they keep on stayin’ because somebody cared enough to be walkin’ beside ‘em when life felt heavier than an ol’ mule draggin’ a plow through rocky soil.

Paul felt that kind of stick-to-it-ness with the Thessalonians. He’d barely spent a month with ‘em, yet he wrote, “We were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 3:7‑8). That there’s what happens when hearts plum invest in other hearts.

And Scripture keeps right on nudgin’ us forward. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together” (Hebrews 10:24‑25). Then, the Lord adds another layer of depth in there for us. “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity” (Proverbs 17:17). That verse plum fits this theme like a lil’ ol’ squirrel fits up in a pecan tree. It sho’-nuff’ reminds us that real fellowship just ain’t optional. It’s mighty essential.

Church ain’t held together by no kind of production. It’s plum held together by people who love one another enough to show up, stick close, and stay steady.

Father, help me love with the kind of faithfulness that holds others up when life gets wobbly. Make me a friend who shows Your heart, Your patience, and Your kindness. Let my presence be a blessing and my words be life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Alright then, friend, may the Lord steady your heart today the way a tall oak tree stands real firm when the wind fusses through the holler. Let His love settle around you like the quiet hush that falls over a barnyard when the sun finally dips behind the ridge. And may your kindness wander out into the world with the same cheerful determination as a lil’ ol’ raccoon that went and found an unlocked feed barrel. Wherever you go, let His love be the reason someone else feels held, seen, and strengthened. Now carry that goodness with you, friend, and let it git to shinin’ brighter than a glowin’ lantern swingin’ on a country fence post at dusk.

With joy,

Gwen
