What Outlives You

Hey there, friend, pull up a chair on this ol’ front porch, I am mighty glad you wandered over because I have been waitin’ to share something that has been simmerin’ in my heart like stew on a wood stove. So, let me tell you, I was just watchin’ a lil’ ol’ determined woodpecker that kept right on tappin’ on the same ol’ tree like it was tryin’ to knock out a mortgage payment. It plum reminded me of how folks talk about “building a legacy,” like they are stackin’ bricks for a presidential library or passin’ down a business empire. But Psalm 61:5 says, “For you, O God, have heard my vows and have given a heritage to those who fear Your name.” That there verse tells us the only legacy that sho’-‘nuff lasts longer than a stubborn ol’ mule’s memory is a legacy of faith.

We all want to leave something behind. Some folks pass down land. Some pass down recipes. Some pass down a barn full of stuff that nobody knows what to do with. But Proverbs 13:22 says, “A good person leaves an inheritance to their children’s children.” That there inheritance is not just money. It is faith. It is character. It is a life that points straight to Jesus like an ol’ rooster that crows at sunrise whether you want it to or not.

Friend, God ain’t askin’ you to build a museum in your honor. He is askin’ you to be plantin’ seeds of faith that will outlive you. Jeremiah 32:39 says, “I will give them one heart and one way so that they will always fear Me for their own good and for the good of their children after them.” That there means your faith today becomes someone else’s strength tomorrow. Your prayers become someone else’s protection. Your obedience becomes someone else’s blessin’.

You don’t need a lawyer or a financial advisor to leave this kind of legacy. You need Scripture. You need earnest prayer. You need a life that whispers Jesus even when your voice gets tired. The world will forget your job title, your awards, and your bank account. But it won’t forget the faith you lived right there in front of ‘em.

Father, help me leave behind something eternal. Teach me to sow faith into my family, my friends, and anyone You place in my path. Make my life a trail that leads straight to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Alright now, friend, as the fireflies start blinkin’ on and off around the yard like tiny lanterns carried by confused beetles, let your heart lean in real close. Faith is the only inheritance that can’t rust, rot, or run off like a loose chicken. Your legacy ain’t what you built but Who you trusted. Your influence ain’t measured in trophies but in truth. And the greatest gift you’ll ever leave behind is a life anchored in the love of Jesus Christ.

With joy,

Gwen
