The Bread that Satisfies
Well, bless my boots, friend! Look at you makin’ the hike and steppin’ up here on this ol’ front porch like you just caught the temptin’ smell of fresh-baked hot biscuits driftin’ across the yard. Pull up a rocker and settle in for a lil’ spell. Let’s sit here like two folks watchin’ morning fog lift off a pond while a curious lil’ chipmunk scampers by like it is inspectin’ the area. Life can make us feel a whole lot like that lil’ chipmunk. We poke around thinkin’ we know what we’re doin’ until God hands us somethin’ we weren’t even expectin’, and suddenly we realize we’re about as prepared for it as a duck tryin’ to climb a pecan tree. That’s why Exodus 16:31 settles over this moment like warm syrup on flapjacks. God fed His people manna, somethin’ they had never seen before, somethin’ that tasted like wafers made with honey. And to deepen this whole message, John 6:35 reminds us that Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” Friend, that verse is like discoverin’ a hidden bakery in the middle of the wilderness. And here’s another verse to give a lil’ more depth. Psalm 34:8 says, “O taste and see that the Lord is good.” That there verse is like findin’ out God Himself sets the table and invites us to feast.
Visitors from far-off places are often amazed at the variety in our grocery stores. But imagine walkin’ into the same store every day for forty years and findin’ only one thing on the shelf. That was Israel’s experience. Every mornin’, manna showed up on the ground like dew. They named it “manna” because Exodus 16:15 says, “They asked, ‘What is it?’” It was unfamiliar, unexpected, and yet exactly what they needed. Jesus used manna to point to Himself in John 6:32-33. He said the true bread from heaven is the One who comes down and gives life to the world. Just like Israel gathered manna daily, we are meant to gather Jesus daily. Not once a week. Not once in a crisis. Daily.
Friend, God’s Word just ain’t meant to be a fancy dessert for special occasions. It’s bread for everyday livin’. Psalm 34:8 invites us to taste and see His goodness. John 6:35 promises that whoever comes to Jesus will never hunger. And Exodus 16 shows us that God provides exactly what we need, even when we don’t recognize it at first glance. Sometimes His provision looks mighty unfamiliar. Sometimes His answers look real strange. But they always nourish the soul.
Father, thank You for bein’ my daily bread. Teach me to gather Your Word every day. Feed my spirit, steady my heart, and help me taste and see Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Alright then, friend, as you make your trek off this porch and step back into your day, push this truth way down in your pocket like a special colored lil’ rock you found out in the woods. God’s provision may not always look like what you expected, but it’ll always be exactly what you need at the time. His Word will feed you like fresh bread straight from Heaven. His presence will satisfy you deeper than any earthly meal. And when you choose to gather His goodness daily, you’ll find your spirit is strengthened, your steps are steadied, and your heart is full enough to share some of that blessin’ with others.
