When the Lord Comes A-Callin’

Well, Butterbean, why don’t you jus’ pull up one o’ them there comfy rockers and git yourself settled in real good like a chubby lil’ ol’ squirrel ‘a‑restin’ after stealin’ half the birdseed ‘cause we’re done ‘bout to be ‘a-wanderin’ right back to the beginnin’. I am ‘a-talkin’ ‘bout Eden. You know, that there place where the air was real fresh, the fruit was real free, and Adam and Eve had themselves a daily walkin’ appointment with the Almighty.

Can you even imagine that? God Himself ‘a-strollin’ through the garden in the cool of the evenin’, like one o’ them there neighbors who done drops by just to chat for a lil’ ol’ while and maybe be ‘a-borrowin’ a cup of sugar. Only this here Neighbor done already created that there sugar.

But one day, Adam and Eve done missed their appointment. They’d done ‘zactly what God done telled ‘em not to do, and suddenly they was a‑hidin’ behind the bushes like real guilty raccoons caught ‘a-stealin’ chicken feed with a spotlight ‘a-shinin’ on ‘em. Their shame done pushed them away from the very One who done loved them most.

So, God called out, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9). Not ‘cause He done misplaced ‘em there like a set of keys but ‘cause their hearts had done wandered.

And Buttercup, that there question didn’t stop that rustlin’ through the leaves of Eden. It’s still ‘a-echoin’ through our busy, scatterbrained days. Revelation 3:20 paints the same picture, only now it’s Jesus a‑standin’ at the door and ‘a-knockin’, ‘a-sayin’ He’s ‘a-wantin’ to come in and sit a spell with us. That’s God’s heart. He comes ‘a-lookin’. He comes ‘a-callin’. He comes ‘a-wantin’ time with His people.

And friend, I reckon He still done asks that very same question today. “Where are you? I’ve been ‘a-lookin’ for you. I’m ‘a-wantin’ to be ‘a-walkin’ with you. I’m ‘a-wantin’ to be ‘a-talkin’ with you.”

Still a call God is still knocking The Christian life is often called a walk for a reason. Amos 3:3 reminds us that two folks can’t be ‘a-walkin’ together unless they be agreein’ on the direction. You can’t walk with someone if you don’t never show up.

Truth is, God done keeps His appointments. He is a‑waitin’ for us more faithfully than a loyal hound dog ‘a-sittin’ by the door. But we get real busy. Distracted. Pulled in a thousand directions like a rooster ‘a-chasin’ too many hens. And ‘a-fore we know it, God is still ‘a-knockin’, still ‘a-callin’, still invitin’ while our calendars are all stuffed real full of everything ‘cept Him.

There’s no excuse good enough to justify ‘a-missin’ time with the One who knows us best, loves us most, and guides us truest. No appointment outranks the onewe have with Him.

Father, I be ‘a‑thankin’ You for bein’ a God who comes ’a-lookin’ for us even when we be ‘a-wanderin’ off like stubborn lil’ ol’ goats. Be ‘a-helpin’ us to be keepin’ our appointments with You. Be ‘a-helpin’ us to slow down, listen up, and walk close. In Jesus name, Amen.

Now go on out there, Junebug, and be a‑keepin’ your appointment with the Lord today. If He came a‑walkin’ through Eden ‘a-lookin’ for Adam, He can surely come a‑walkin’ through your busy day, ready to be ‘a-meetin’ you right where you are, even if life gits to feelin’ as scattered as a flock of chickens in a big ol’ windstorm.

With joy,

Gwen
