Stop Guessin’ and Start Restin’
Alright now, butterbean, you come on over her and pull you a chair up on this here front porch. Go on ahead an’ let that there screen door slam shut behind you ‘cause we are about to get settled into a truth that will calm your soul quicker than a tired hound dog ’a-floppin’ under a shade tree in July.
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.” Now, friend, that there is not God ;a-sayin’, “Sit there like a bump on a log.” That is God sayin, “Quit yo’ fussin’, quit yo’ frettin’, quit yo’ tryin’ to run the universe like a squirrel ’a-tryin’ to direct traffic. Be still. Doggone it, you done betta be ‘a-knowin’ who is in charge. Now brace yourself, and hold on to yo’ overalls ‘ cause here it comes, friend! It ain’t us! We just ain’t in charge!
Some folks get so wound up ‘a-worryin’ about the future and the return of Christ that they done start to lookin’ like a rooster ’a-tryin’ to solve algebra. Jesus done already told us in Matthew 24:36 that no one knows the day or the hour that the Lord is ‘a-comin’. Not thme angels. Not even the Son, an’ that there’s Jesus Hisself. Only the Father knows. If Jesus Hisself did not go to ‘a-circlin’ a date on the calendar, what makes us think we can be ‘a- figurin’ it out ourselves with a magnifyin’ glass and a stack of newspaper clippin’s.
God done never asked us to be fortune tellers. He jist asked us to be faithful. That there’s a real difference bigger than a cow pattie in springtime.
Us ‘a-bein’ ready does not mean us obsessin’ over timelines. It means ‘a-livin’ today like it matters. Lovin’ people today. Obeyin’ His Word today. Sharin’ the Gospel today. Lettin’ God handle the schedule. He has never once been ‘a-needin’ us to tap Him on the shoulder and say, “Lord, I think You done missed somethin’.”
And when your mind done starts to racin’ like a squirrel ’a-skitterin’ across a tin roof, remember Psalm 40:8 tell us, “I desire to do Your will, my God. Your law is within my heart. “That is the posture that steadies a soul. Not panic. Not predictions. Just trust.
Father, help me be still and know that You are God. Teach me to trust Your timing and rest in Your sovereignty. Keep me faithful with what You have placed in front of me today. In Jesus holy name, Amen.
Now go on, Junebug, and carry this here truth with you like a raccoon ’a-totin’ off a shiny treasure. God is ‘a-runnin’ the show. He always has. And leanin’ on back into His timing will settle your spirit deeper than a mule ’a-settlin’ into soft hay at sundown.
With joy,
Gwen
