Small Sparks, Big Shine
Well, howdy-doo, friend, why don’t you come on over here and sit for a lil’ ol’ spell on this here ol’ front porch swing with me? Last night I caught a lil’ ol’ firefly and put him in a mason jar, and I’ll tell you plain as a plump ol’ possum grinnin’ in a corn patch, that tiny thing did somethin’ magical. It lit up the whole yard like it thought it was the grand marshal of the summer parade. Funny how somethin’ so small can git to shinin’ so big an’ bright. An’ as I sat there watching that lil’ flickerin’ glow on and off, the Lord whispered to my heart that faithfulness works in the same way. It’s them real small, quiet, everyday moments that light up a life.
Jesus said in Luke 16:10, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.” That there means God is watchin’ all them little things, an’ truth be told, that there lil’ ol’ firefly actually preached a better sermon than some big time preachers I’ve heard on Sunday mornin’. God sees every tiny spark of obedience, even them little bitty ones nobody else ever notices, and He delights in ‘em like a lil’ child delights in a jar full of summer light.
Big acts of faith are wonderful, but it’s all them small ones that really shape your heart. God uses the ordinary to test your motives. Are you serving for applause or ‘cause you love Him? Are you faithful when no one even sees, or only when the spotlight is on you like a lil’ ol’ raccoon that got caught in the chicken coop with the lights came on?
And here’s the best part. God sees what others have been overlookin’. Matthew 6:4 says, “He rewards what is done in secret. Every quiet act of kindness, every patient choice, every moment you choose integrity over convenience becomes an offering of worship.” Nothin’ slips past His watchful eyes, not even the things you think are way too small to ever even matter at all.
A’-fore David ever held a crown, he held a shepherd’s staff. A’-fore Joseph ever ran Egypt, he ran errands in Potiphar’s house. God promotes those who prove faithful in the small things. He’s watchin’ how you handle today’s tiny tasks to prepare you for tomorrow’s big assignments.
So, friend, don’t be despisin’ them small things. They’re the building blocks of character, the seeds of future blessing, and the quiet places where God molds your heart.
Lord, help me be faithful in the small things today. Teach me to honor You in the quiet moments, the unseen tasks, and the ordinary places. Shape my character, strengthen my trust, and prepare me for whatever You have ahead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now, glory be, friend, as you go steppin’ off this here porch and gittin’ back into your busy day, don’t be forgittin’ that faithfulness just ain’t no flashy fireworks show. It’s more like a steady ol’ box turtle ploddin’ toward the relief of the cool water in the pond. Real slow. Real quiet. Real consistent. An’ it’s real powerful in ways you can’t even see or hear yet. But, keep right on showin’ up. Keep right on doin’ good. Keep right on tendin’ the to the small things. One day you’ll look back and realize all them there tiny lil’ ol’ steps were takin’ you down the very path God was usin’ to lead you right into His greater purpose.
With joy,
Gwen
