Rock or Sand?

Well now, what a great day to see you comin’ over here, friend! So, come right on up to this ol’ front porch for a minute. I was watchin’ a lil’ woodpecker hammerin’ away at a tree like it was plum tryin’ to build a three‑story condo, and it sho’-nuff’ made me git to thinkin’ about foundations. You can peck, stack, plan, and decorate all you want to, but if what you’re buildin’ plum sits on the wrong thing, it’ll git to wobblin’ like an ol’ chicken hen tryin’ to figure out how to be standin’ on a real greasy fence rail. Jesus asked a real simple question in Matthew 7:24, which states, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” So, then, let me ask you, “What is your life built on? Rock or sand?”

Jesus said the wise person sho’-nuff’ hears His words and then acts on them. That there person is like someone who builds on solid rock. Storms come. Winds howl. Floods rise. Yet that there house stands real firm. The foolish person hears the same words but does not act on them. That there life is plum built on sand, and when trouble hits, everything collapses faster than an ol’ barn roof in a big ol’ Texas thunderstorm.

Psalm 18:2 gives us a picture worth holdin’ on to sayin’, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.” David plum knew what it meant to stand on something real solid. He had faced lions, bears, giants, and kings with bad attitudes, yet he stayed real steady because his foundation was standin’ on God Himself. And First Corinthians 3:11 reminds us that “no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” If Jesus ain’t the base of your life, then everything else is just plain ol’ sand in disguise.

Let me tell you something, friend. Sand looks real fine until the storm shows up. It feels real soft. It seems real easy. It plum lets you build real fast. But it can’t be holdin’ you when life gets real loud.

Rock takes strong commitment. Rock takes real obedience. Rock takes real trust. But rock sho’-nuff’ won’t be movin’ when the wind starts hollerin’ real loud.

So let me ask you. What is your life built on today? Your feelings? Your plans? Your fears? Or the solid rock of God’s Word? All them ol’ storms don’t git to be decidin’ your future. But your foundation does.

Father, help us build our lives on Your truth. Make Your Word our anchor, Your presence our strength, and Your promises our foundation. Teach us to hear and obey so our lives stand firm no matter what comes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Mercy me, friend! Don’t you wait for a big storm to find out what foundation you’re standin’ on. Sand will plum charm you until it betrays you. Rock will plum challenge you until it secures you. What seems real small today may become tomorrow’s shelter. Just as a sunrise steadies even the jumpiest lil’ ol’ deer that thought the night might would swallow it whole, God will steady your heart when His Word becomes your firm foundation. And long after the howlin’ of the coyotes gits to quietenin’ down and the night crawlers return to their shelters in the woods as the sun rises over the horizon, His rock‑solid truth will still be holdin’ you upright, surely remindin’ you that the wisest builders don’t never choose sand for the foundation of their buildings. So, place your foundation on the Rock of Ages!

With joy,

Gwen
