Right into His Presence
Hi there, friend, come on up here on this ol’ front porch and settle yourself right down. Well, land sakes, if you could smell them cinnamon fritters coolin’ on the windowsill or hear that cranky ol’ blue jay fussin’ at a lil’ ol’ chipmunk that keeps stealin’ pine nuts, you’d know you’ve stepped right into a place where your spirit can breathe deep. Now let’s check in on a truth that’s as steady as an ol’ mule pickin’ its way across a rocky ridge. Genesis 35:6–7 tells us, “Jacob came to Bethel and built an altar, callin’ it El‑Bethel, the God of the house of God.” And tucked right beside it is Psalm 73:28, which says, “It is good for me to draw near to God.” These two verses fit together real good like two acorns tucked snug under the same old oak tree, each one remindin’ us that God’s house is mighty special, but knowin’ the God of that house is what changes everything.
Now, friend, Jacob had done been to Bethel before. The first time he plum stumbled in half scared and half runnin’ from trouble, he didn’t even know he’d sho’-nuff’ stepped right into God’s presence. He woke up from that ladder dream sayin’, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not” in Genesis 28:16. That’s how a whole lot of folks are. They show up at church because Mama went, or because a friend invited ’em, or because it’s what respectable folks do on a Sunday mornin’. They sit in the pew, sing the songs, nod at the preacher, and never realize they’ve done walked right into the gates of heaven.
But when Jacob came back years later, somethin’ had plum changed. He didn’t just visit the house of God. He built an altar to the God of the house of God. That’s the difference between tradition and transformation. Between sittin’ in a pew and kneelin’ in surrender. Between knowin’ about God and knowin’ God Himself. Psalm 73:28 says, “Draw near to God, not just His house.” And James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” That there’s the invitation. Not to the building. To the Builder.
Friend, God plum wants more than your attendance. He wants your altar. He wants your heart. He downright wants you to know Him, not just the place where He dwells.
Father, draw us near to You. Help us move from routine to relationship. Teach us to seek Your presence, hear Your voice, and build altars in our hearts that honor You. Make us aware of Your nearness every time we gather. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Alright then, friend, as you git to movin’ on from this here porch and into the doin’s of your day, carry this here truth like a lantern glowin’ bright even when the fog rolls in real thick. Seek God Himself with the steady determination of an ol’ barn cat guardin’ its favorite sunny spot. Look for His presence the way a lil’ ol’ deer searches out a quiet stream at dusk. And walk forward knowin’ He’s ready to meet you not just in His house, but in every place your boots land, shapin’ your heart with more skill than a master craftsman turnin’ a rough timber into somethin’ mighty beautiful.
With joy,
Gwen
