Rejoicin’ in the Rough Spots
Well, flip my flapjacks and set the porch rocker to swayin’, friend. Look at you wanderin’ up here like you plum just stepped out of a willow-lined creek bed and spotted a cabin so welcoming even that plump ol’ badger over yonder has paused right in mid-waddle like it’s downright tryin’ to muster a polite lil’ ol’ nod in your direction. I’m plum beside myself with joy that you came and found your way over here. Go on now and settle yourself in the way a calm ol’ river otter stretches out on a flat stone even when a jittery lil’ thrush keeps dartin’ around its tail like it’s tryin’ to be runnin’ the whole back forty. Psalm 34:8 invites us to “taste and see that the Lord is good.” Romans 8:28 reminds us that “God works all things together for good for those who love Him.” Isaiah 55:9 tells us, “His ways rise higher than ours.” And to deepen that truth even further, Psalm 94:19 adds, “When anxiety was great within me, Your consolation brought me joy.” Them verses stand together like four mountain cedars standin’ guard on a ridge, tellin’ every passerby that God’s goodness stays put even when life feels about as confusin’ as an ol’ goat tryin’ to make sense of a screen door.
Friend, trouble has a way of showin’ up like an ol’ barn cat skiddin’ across a freshly waxed floor, arms flailin’, tail puffed, and no clue how it got itself into that mess. Life can feel mighty upside down sometimes. Storms roll in. Plans fall apart. Circumstances plum twist themselves into knots tighter than a lil’ ol’ calf tangled up in a rope. But Scripture teaches us that believers carry a holy buoyancy. We rise. We sing. We rejoice not because the trouble is pleasant but because Jesus is present. His comfort ain’t tied to the size of the storm but the strength of His nearness. And James 1:12 reminds us that “Blessed is the one that perseveres under trial,” which means even the rough spots carry seeds of blessin’ that God Himself tends.
When the waters rise, He plum steadies us. When the nights stretch long, He sho’-nuff warms us. When fear tries to rattle our bones, He surely whispers truth that settles us deeper than any trouble can shake. Joy ain’t the absence of hardship. It’s the presence of Christ.
Father, steady my heart when life gets heavy. Teach me to rejoice not in my circumstances but in Your faithfulness. Fill my spirit with courage, hope, and holy confidence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Well now, if that don’t beat all, friend. I surely am hopin’ that this ol’ porch chat has rested in your spirit like a cool drink of sweet tea on a warm Texas afternoon, and now the rest of your day is stretchin’ out there like a long sunlit trail invitin’ a steady ol’ mule toward open country. Step into what comes next with the kind of quiet boldness a lil’ ol’ quail shows when it scoots out from under a cedar limb trustin’ the wide world to make more room for it. Carry God’s joy with you the way a seasoned ol’ beaver carries its timber, purposeful and unshaken by whatever critter gits to splashin’ around in the creek. And move forward with a heart that sho’-nuff’ knows God’s goodness is already stirrin’ in places you have not reached yet, invitin’ you to keep goin’ with hope tucked right up under your arm like a trusted map.
With joy,
Gwen
