Recognized by Your Life Accent
Well now, ease on up to this ol’ front porch, friend, and sit for a spell in a chair that’s held more conversations than a chatty lil’ ol’ blue jay that plum refuses to mind its own business. I’m mighty glad you decided to come wanderin’ over here for a lil’ ol’ spell. You know, some truths just land softer out here where the wind rustles the oak leaves and the porch floor hums like it is tryin’ to keep rhythm with your heartbeat. Matthew 26:73-74 says, “Surely you are one of them, your accent gives you away… Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, ‘I do not know the man!’ Immediately a rooster crowed.” That lil’ ol’ rooster’s crow wasn’t just noise. It was plum a wake‑up call for Peter’s heart.
Now Judas betrayed Jesus once, but Simon Peter plum denied Him three times in front of a crowd. Judas collapsed under guilt without repentance. Peter’s story took a mighty different turn. That long walk behind the soldiers from Gethsemane, down the Kidron Valley, and up to Caiaphas’ house must’ve felt a whole lot heavier than an ol’ mule draggin’ a plow through real stubborn, thick clay. He’d followed Jesus since the day he’d dropped his nets. He’d been bold enough to swing a sword earlier that night. But now he was close, yet not courageous.
Friend, have you ever been there? Close enough to speak up for Jesus, but fear plum tied your tongue tighter than a knot in a fishin’ line. Bein’ real close just ain’t enough. God desires real boldness. Proverbs 29:25 gives us a truth that fits perfectly sayin’, “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” Fear plum traps us. Trust sho’-nuff’ frees us. And Acts 4:13 adds another layer by tellin’ us, “They recognized that they had been with Jesus.” People can tell when you belong to Him, even if you’re tryin’ to blend in like a shy lil’ ol’ raccoon hidin’ behind a trash can.
Peter tried real hard to blend in. He plum tried to distance himself. But his accent gave him away. Folks recognized him from ministry days. They sho’-nuff’ knew he was from Galilee. And sometimes people recognize us, too. They see our faith, our walk, our love for Christ, and they plum git to wonderin’ why we haven’t stood up boldly.
Friend, don’t be lettin’ the ol’ rooster crowin’ catch you off guard. Today is plum your moment. Step out of them shadows. Stand for Jesus with the real courage that comes straight from trust, not fear.
Father, give us boldness when fear tries to shrink our faith. Strengthen our hearts, steady our voices, and help us stand for Jesus no matter the crowd or the circumstance. Remind us that trust in You keeps us safe. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ok now, friend, don’t you be lettin’ hesitation keep you hidin’ like a shy lil’ ol’ possum pretendin’ it’s invisible peekin’ around from behind a skinny fence post. God is still shapin’ courage right inside you while you’re standin’ in the middle of uncertainty. What feels like a shaky moment today may become tomorrow’s testimony. Just as dawn surprises even the grumpiest ol’ barn owl that thought the night would last forever, God will bring boldness into your spirit again. And long after the crickets quiet down and the breeze settles soft across the fields, His courage will still be hummin’ real steady inside your heart, remindin’ you that you were made to be standin’ up tall for Jesus.
With joy,
Gwen
