Look Before You Leap
Friend, come on up to this ol’ front porch and let these boards greet you like they just woke up from a real long nap and realized their favorite visitor was headed over their way. I’m mighty glad you stopped by. Settle yourself into a rocker and let the good Lord steady your heart the way a seasoned fencepost stands firm even when a curious lil’ ol’ calf leans on it real hard just for fun. Proverbs 22:3 tells us, “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly and suffers the consequences.” To deepen that wisdom, Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” These two verses stand together like two quilt squares stitched in real tight by the same loving hand, tellin’ one beautiful story of wisdom and caution.
Friend, I once watched a high school demonstration where a student pretended to be injured. The blood was fake, but the emergency teams were real, and the tension in the room felt as heavy as a rain‑soaked hay bale. Doctors, nurses, and organ donor specialists walked students through the consequences of one rash decision. The coordinator said they weren’t tryin’ to stop young folks from enjoyin’ their independence. They just wanted to give ‘em a different perspective on the real‑world fallout that can follow a foolish choice.
Scripture does the same thing. Proverbs 22:3 warns us that “danger is real and consequences are real.” The message is so important that God repeats it word for word in Proverbs 27:12. When we sin, there is a spiritual price tag. God forgives, but He doesn’t erase the consequences. That’s why we have to think ahead, foresee danger, and take precautions. And one of the best precautions is fillin’ your heart with God’s Word, so you can be makin’ wise decisions every day.
Psalm 119:11 reminds us to “hide God’s Word in our hearts so we will not sin against Him.” That there means Scripture ain’t just a book to read. It’s a bright lantern for your path, a compass for your choices, and a guardrail for your life. And Proverbs 27:17 tells us that “iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” In other words, surround yourself with folks who help you stay wise, not folks who nudge you toward trouble like a mischievous lil’ ol’ raccoon leadin’ you straight to the trash cans.
Wisdom don’t shout. It plum whispers. It nudges. It warns. And it saves us from consequences we never needed to face.
Father, help us foresee danger and take godly precautions. Teach us to hide Your Word in our hearts and surround ourselves with wise friends. Give us discernment to choose well and courage to walk in Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
