Holdin’ Tight to Your WORTH
Well, merciful heavens, Buttercup, be ‘a-hurryin’ up and ‘a-gittin’ to pullin’ up a rocker, and be 'a-makin' real sure you be ‘a-swattin’ that there lil’ ol’ pesky junebug right on off'n your knee 'cause we’re ‘bout to go ‘a-wadin’ knee-deep into sumpthin’ that’s truer than a hound dog’s nose is at ‘a-sniffin’ things out and twice as funny. Matthew 10:37-38 done tells us that anybody who is ‘a-lovin’ their father or mother more than Him ain’t worthy of Him, and anybody who won’t be ‘a-pickin’ up their cross and ‘a-followin’ Him ain’t worthy either. That there truth’ll be ‘a-makin’ you sit up straighter than a lil’ ol’ possum done caught a standin’ in the henhouse.
Now let me be ‘a-tellin’ you, I done had one of them there moments not long ago. I was ‘a-tryin’ to be ‘a-phonin’ a friend when the enemy done started ‘a-whisperin’ tomfollery in my ear ‘a-sayin’, “You jes’ ain’t deservin’ o’ her time. She’s real beautiful, popular, and smart, an’ you ain’t none o’ those things.” Them lies came ‘a-comin’ faster than a squirrel ‘a-runnin’ an’ escapin’ from the neighbor’s big ol’ hound dog. But praise the Lord, I done recognized that sneaky rascal’s voice and made that call anyway. We was ‘a-laughin’ an’ ‘a-talkin’, but afterward them ol’ familiar ideas came ‘a-crawlin’ right back like raccoons ‘a-lookin’ for leftovers, ;a-sayin’, “You jes’ ain’t worthy.”
Maybe you’ve done heard them same lies ‘a-comin’ to your mind. Maybe ‘a-comparin’ or ‘a-shamin’ or somebody’s real mean ol’ careless words’ve done made you feel lower than a lil’ ol’ earthworm belly crawlin’ under a muddy boot. But Jesus don’t measure worth like the world does. The world is always ‘a-starin’ at the outside, but 1 Samuel 16:7 done says God is always ‘a-lookin’ at the heart. Romans 5:8 is ‘a-remindin’ us that Christ done died for us while we were still ‘a-bein’ sinners. Our worth is done rooted real deep in Him, not in waistlines, résumés, or hair that done gits ta’ behavin’ good on real hot, humid days.
So, Buttercup, we jes’ gotta be ‘a-startin’ to thinkin’ ‘bout our W O R T H with Scripture as we be ‘a-sittin’ with God and His Word ‘a-lettin’ Him show us who we are clearer than a clean mason jar held up to the sun.
W. is for Who’s done worthy. Revelation 4:11 and 5:12.
O. is for Our soul-tie connection to Him. Genesis 1:27.
R. is for Redemption’s price tag. 1 Peter 1:17=20, 1 Corinthians 7:23, Acts 20:28.
T. is for The One Who’s in me. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Ephesians :13-14.
H. is for How our worth is done measured. Matthew 10:37-38.
Father, I come before You ‘a-seekin’ wisdom, understandin’ and a heart that gits to seein’ truth. Be ‘a-helpin’ me live a life worthy of You. Be ‘a-teachin’ me to see myself the way You be ‘a-seein’ me. Be ‘a-keepin’ me from lookin’ to others or achievements to be ‘a-findin’ my worth. Be ‘a-helpin’ me be lovin’ and obeyin’ You so that I’m found worthy in Your eyes ‘cause You alone are worthy of all glory and honor. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Now, Buttercup, as you head off on this here fine day, you jes’ gotta be ‘a-rememberin’ that an ol’ cow may not be ‘a-knowin’ her value, but that there ol’ farmer surely does. A firefly may only be ‘a-flickerin’, but it’s still ‘a-lightin’ up the night. And you, ‘a-bein’ created by God, redeemed by Christ, and all filled up with His Spirit, are worth more than a whole big ol’ barn full of prize winnin’ registered horses. So, go be ‘a-walkin’ in that there truth like a hardworkin’ lil’ ol’ rooster who done finally figured out the sun is gonna be ‘a-risin’ without any of his help.
With joy,
Gwen
