Every Hour Matters
Well, hey there, friend! It’s so good to have you stoppin’ in today! Why don’t you just step on up here on this ol’ front porch and settle yourself in good? The Lord’s got a word today that’s more satisfyin’ than a cast‑iron pot of peach cobbler coolin’ on a summer windowsill. The breeze is driftin’ through these ol’ oak branches like it’s blowin’ in some real interestin’ news from every ridge around here, and a loud‑mouthed ol’ crow is perched on the fence fussin’ at a slow‑trottin’ ol’ mule that’s wanderin’ across the yard like it’s inspectin’ the property. Meanwhile, a plump ol’ raccoon is sittin’ by the rain barrel actin’ like it’s in charge, and a skittish lil’ squirrel keeps peekin’ out from behind the tree trunk over there like it’s takin’ notes. Watchin’ that whole critter committee business reminds me of Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
One day, every hour you have been given will be accounted for. Not just the years. The days. The conversations. The money. The work. The quiet moments when no one else was watchin’. A. W. Tozer once said, “If God gives you a few more years, remember, it’s not yours. Your time must honor God, your home must honor God, your activity must honor God, and everything you do must honor God.”
That’s the Christian life. Not just givin’ God a few hours each week. Not just squeezin’ Him into an already crowded schedule. Not just addin’ Him to your plans. But livin’ as though every part of your life already belongs to Him. Because it actually does.
Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” That means God wants us to treat time like a sacred gift, not just a loose handful of minutes we toss around carelessly. When Moses prayed those words, he was remindin’ us that wisdom grows when we understand how short life really is. Numberin’ our days ain’t about countin’ ‘em like coins in a jar. It’s more about recognizin’ that every single sunrise is a fresh mercy and every single breath is borrowed air. It’s about wakin’ up with the quiet realization that today is another page God has handed us, and He expects us to write somethin’ on it that matters.
Time just ain’t no toy we fiddle around with. It’s a trust we steward. And when we see it that way, our choices start changin’. We stop wastin’ hours on things that drain us and start investin’ in things that shape us. We begin to understand that wisdom just ain’t found in how much time we have, but in how faithfully we use the time we have been given.
Romans 14:12 says, “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” That means nothing slips through the cracks. Every moment matters. Every choice counts. Every day is recorded in the heart of God.
I once heard an ol’ farmer say he learned more about stewardship from watchin’ his old hound dog than from any sermon he ever heard. That dog used every ounce of daylight to do what it was made to do. It hunted, guarded, rested, and stayed alert. It never wasted a moment. And, friend, if a hound dog can honor its purpose, surely we can honor ours.
The question isn’t whether God has a place in your life. The question is whether He rules it. Does your calendar honor Him? Does your home honor Him? Do your ambitions honor Him? Does the way you spend today honor Him? One day, every believer will answer those questions before God.
Father, teach me to honor You with every moment You give me. Help me use my time wisely, live with purpose, and keep my heart set on what matters most. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Alright then, friend, as you step off this porch today, carry this truth with you the way a rancher carries a glowin’ lantern on a moonless night. Time is a trail that never loops back, and every step counts. When you give your minutes to God, He turns them into somethin’ eternal. And just like a steady river carves its way through rock over the years, a life lived for Him will leave a mark that lasts far beyond your days. Now go on, friend. Keep on mindin’ all them crazy critters, watch your step, and honor Him with every hour He gives you.
With joy,
Gwen
