Beyond the Last Breath

Well, now, glory be, friend, every once in a while, life hands you a moment that plum feels like you just wandered straight into the middle of a story God that has been tellin’ since before the first rooster ever even figured out how to crow. I had one of them moments while watchin’ a squirrel attempt a ballet dance on a fence rail. He wobbled, twirled, and nearly toppled off twice, but he kept right on dancin’ like the whole forest was cheerin’ him toward greatness. And I thought to myself, “Well, mercy, if that little fella can dance with that much joy, imagine what our loved ones are doin’ up in Heaven.” That thought settled over me like the quiet hush that drapes a meadow just before the sun stretches awake. It brought to mind Revelation 14:13, where God says, “Those who die in the Lord are blessed, resting from earthly labor while their deeds follow them into eternity.”

Rest in peace is not a sad farewell. It’s a real holy new beginning. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones.” That’s not sorrow. That’s celebration. And Revelation 14:13 assures us that Heaven is not idle. It is alive with purpose.

Heaven just ain’t no cloud floatin’ retirement home for saints. Scripture paints a place bursting with life. Psalm 150:6 calls on every creature with breath to praise the Lord, and friend, that includes singin’, shoutin’, clappin’, and harmonizin’ better than any choir we’ve ever heard. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us there is a time for everything, and in Heaven there is a time for worship, a time for service, a time for fellowship, and I reckon a time for dancin’ that would put every barn dance in Texas to shame. The deeds of the righteous follow them, which means their love, faith, and service echo right on into eternity.

And if you want a taste of Heaven’s excitement, listen to the modern-day saints who saw it before they stepped through the door. D. L. Moody, pastor and founder of Christian educational institutions, cried out, “Earth is receding. Heaven is opening. God is calling.” Catherine Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army, whispered, “I am not going under, but over.” Charles Wesley, pastor and leader in the Methodist movement, said with joy, “I shall be satisfied with Thy likeness. I shall be satisfied.” And Charles Spurgeon, the prince of preachers, rested back with peace on his face and said, “I am resting in Jesus now. I shall see Him. I shall see Him.” Witnesses said his whole countenance softened, as if Heaven had cracked open just enough to light the room. Friend, those were not people fading into nothingness. Those were souls happily catching sight of their heavenly home.

Romans 5:1 says, “We have peace with God through Jesus Christ.” That peace is the doorway into eternal rest. Not the end of life, but it’s the beginning of life the way God intended it.

Father, thank You that true rest is found in You. Help me live with Heaven in my heart and peace in my steps. Give me courage to trust You with life, death, and eternity. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I do declare, friend, let me leave this last word of truth with you the way an old storyteller lays one final ember on the fire, glowing and full of warmth. Heaven is not quiet or dull. It’s a place where joy moves like music through the air, where worship rises like a river, and where God’s people dance, sing, serve, create, and shine with purpose as they go about the heavenly work the Lord has prepared for them. When your final breath here gives way to your first breath there, you won’t be driftin’ into emptiness. You’ll be steppin’ into a glorious celebration so full of life and joy that every earthly pleasure will feel like a mighty dim whisper compared to the magnificent song of eternity with the Lord.

With joy,

Gwen
