Where Real Change Begins
Hey there, friend, land sakes alive, come on up this ol’ front porch and rest yourself for a spell. I’ve been waitin’ to hear your footsteps crunch up this path like a bright‑eyed lil’ ol’ possum that finally decided to quit hidin’ behind the woodpile and come visit proper. Pull up that rocker that creaks louder than an ol’ barn hinge that’s survived more winters than it bothers to count. Mercy me, it’s a real pleasure to have you here, and I reckon today’s word is fixin’ to settle into your heart like a handmade quilt of warmth laid across your shoulders on a cool mountain mornin’.
Mark 7:21-22 says, “From within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.” Friend, Jesus didn’t sugarcoat a single thing. He spoke truth plain as an ol’ rooster crowin’ at dawn. Folks back then sho’-nuff strutted around thinkin’ they were holier than a church choir on Sunday mornin’, but Jesus saw plum straight through ‘em like sunlight through thin curtains. He knew the trouble wasn’t in their fancy robes or polished manners. It was plum in their hearts, the same place trouble still likes to hide out today.
Why is our world still so tangled up in conflict, fear and foolishness after all these centuries? Jesus said the root of it is a heart problem. We’ve traded the rightful place of God for the “god” of Self, and that swap downright never ends well. Only Christ can change a heart, and only changed hearts can change a world. Proverbs 4:23 tells us, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Friend, that there verse reaches deep, remindin’ us that whatever grows in the heart eventually plum spills out into the world around us. And Ezekiel 36:26 says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” That there promise stands tall as a mountain ridge, remindin’ us that God don’t patch up the old. He plum makes things new.
Does that there mean we sit back and ignore the messes of poverty, injustice, sickness or war? No, sir. It don’t. God calls us to fight evil wherever it plum shows its face, the way a determined lil’ ol’ barn cat chases off a pesky lil’ mouse. But He also reminds us that real change sho’-niff’ begins with repentance and spiritual renewal. Revival don’t start in the headlines. It downright starts in the heart.
Father, there is much in this world that needs Your healing touch. Begin Your renewing work in my heart. Cleanse what is broken, correct what is crooked, and fill me with Your Spirit so that Your goodness flows through my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ok, there it is, friend! Now that this truth has settled inside you like a warm light glowin’ through a cabin window at dusk, your day ahead is already bein’ shaped by it. You’ve gotta be holdin’ onto repentance the way a careful ol’ farmer holds a fragile seed, knowin’ it carries the promise of somethin’ better. You’ve gotta be guardin’ your heart the way a watchful lil’ deer guards its quiet clearin’, aware of every rustle that might disturb its peace. You’ve gotta be livin’ renewal the way a fresh spring bubbles up from rocky ground, steady and sure no matter what tried to block it. And you’ve gotta be walkin’ in truth the way a seasoned trail guide trusts the map etched into memory, knowin’ the One who drew it never makes a mistake. Friend, this truth is already being woven into the path of your day, and you’ve gotta be usin’ it like a trusted lantern that lights every step with God’s steady goodness.
With joy,
Gwen
