When You Need a Light for the Next Step

Well, come ramblin’ on up here on this ol’ front porch, friend, and set that Bible right here beside the lemonade pitcher. I’m mighty glad you came by. Life can hand us decisions that leave us more turned around than a lil’ ol’ June bug trapped inside a porch lantern. We ask everybody what they think, ponder sixteen possibilities, and sometimes plum wind up with more opinions than an ol’ rooster has feathers.

But Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Notice God’s Word is called a lamp, not a stadium floodlight. Most times, He gives enough light for the next step, not the next twenty miles.

When I plum don’t know which way to go, the best voice in the room ain’t necessarily the loudest one. It’s God’s.

Second Timothy 3:16 reminds us that “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God” and is useful for teaching, correcting, and training us. God’s Word don’t merely tell us what sounds good. It shapes our thinking until we begin wanting what He sho’-nuff’ knows is good.

And right here’s another beautiful truth. Psalm 119:130 says, “The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” Friend, you don’t need a theology degree before God can guide you. You just need an open Bible, an honest heart, and a willingness to obey what He shows you.

Sometimes we keep askin’ God for a sign while the answer is downright sittin’ unopened on the nightstand.

Father, when I don’t know what to do, draw me first to Your Word. Quiet every voice that competes with Yours and give me wisdom to understand what You are showing me. Give me courage to obey even when I can only see the next step. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Alright now, friend, tuck that Word under your arm and head on into the day. A lil’ ol’ raccoon can investigate every shiny thing in the woods and still not know where it’s goin’. An ol’ trail horse does better when it follows the rider than when it studies every fork in the road. You don’t have to see the whole journey before you start walkin’. Open the Book, follow the Light, and trust God with the road beyond what you can see.

With joy,

Gwen
